It sounds like you do in fact need the microphone input part to have voice. Just what is the make and model of the microphone anyway? Do you know? Look up its manual online if you can. You should see a schematic of some sort.

If you're using a computer as part of your DJ equipment, the microphone is what you use for voice. Line in needs to be amplified.

I have two "police scanners" on left and right line in and can hear them on the computer. But! the scanners themselves amplify the output line out.

Its because the impedance of line in is well above a standard microphones impedance in many cases,
an average microphone will be under 200 ohms where as a line in can be well over that meaning that the line in will not pick up such a low voltage.

The reason a Microphone is low impedance is so that its less sensitive to unwanted sounds or unwanted interference but this means that it can be hard to detect.

This discrepancy means if you are not using the correct port the mic needs to be boosted or re routed through something that has a preamp or alternatively you could buy a mic that has a built in preamp.

Things that will plug into the line in and boost the mic.

    - Mixer
    - standalone preamp in between the connection.

the other option which you opted for is interface which is perfectly fine they have inbuilt preamps. Mixer to line in gives you more control but a interface also is capable of that same control just through a different route. You can mixer to line in on the interface if you wanted to. The interfaces line in i mean and it means you get to sound stage your inputs at the start of the chain.
