    Lost sound

Hi everyone I am a bit long in the tooth for all this tech stuff so as you can imagine if I get a problem it normally has a simple solution and I have joined because I have a problem, My monitor is in fact a TV as well, and up until the other day I had sound, somehow I have lost it and cannot get it back the tv works fine with volume so the problem has to be with my PC I have been in control panel and everything seems to be as it should be there, I am on with team viewer so if someone with more knowledge than me would like to have a fiddle I have no problem with that I have a lot of music on here that I obviously cannot listen to and do not wish to lose so someone help me please

Hi, it seems you have a desktop (make, model etc unknown), Windows build number unknown.

Let's check just a few basic things first.

First, do you have any sound from your desktop- e.g. via headphones or any other form of loudspeaker?

Second, how is your PC connected to your TV? Please be as exact as you can.
If a cable, check connections of course, and check your choice of TV input.

Third, please run the audio troubleshooter and report the result.

    - post a screenshot like this:

Tutorial available - in the searchable Tutorials section (above) if needed.

    Thanks.

And thank you for your reply.

    but nothing heard
    - and what-other than the TV- were you using to hear the sound?
I assume the troubleshooter reported no failures.
Did you check the Detailed information?

And what does your Volume Mixer show? (Screenshot please)

And if you look here - is the correct device selected as default, and if you click Test, do the green bars move?

    - and you also need to have the correct item selected as your default output, as per my screenshot, and the correct input (HDMI) selected on your TV.

I still don't know if you've tried headphones or other speakers.

Ok, let's try a different approach.

up until the other day I had sound, somehow I have lost it
If either some setting changed or was changed, or perhaps something was installed that caused this, for example... using a System Restore point might correct this.

This will not help if it's actually a hardware problem of course.

This will only be possible if you actually have a recent restore point of course.

Here's how. (I will type this out for you myself rather than giving you another tutorial.

    1. In the taskbar search box (or Win key + S to show the box) type
    System restore

    2. Look for
    Create restore point

    3. Click that - you should see
    Lost sound-1.jpg

    4. Click 'System Restore' button

    You should see
    Lost sound-1.jpg

    5. Click Next and select the most recent restore point.

    6. Click 'Scan for affected programs' and capture a screenshot.
If you can't do that, photograph the screen.

    7. Click Next

    and now be patient.

Your PC will restart - could take 20 minutes.

Note whether this succeeds or fails. (If it fails, nothing will have been changed).

If it succeeds, see if you now have sound.

but the speakers are working when watching tv
If you don't have any other speakers, to which speakers are you referring, and how are they connected to your PC?

There's a logical contradiction or missing information there.

You also referred to a USB to HDMI cable early on.

Are you sure you don't mean HDMI to HDMI?

Please try the System Restore point.

Without headphones or a separate way to listen to sound this is harder. Hence the other check I asked for (click Test, sound bars).

Do you have a friend or relative you could ask to help and perhaps lend you some headphones?
