Need help setting up Speech Recognition

I have a Bose headset with a microphone built in and I get it to work (speech recognition) with the Sound app and with the prompt box of Bard AI. But I can't get it to work with anything else. Someone please help me? Thank you.....

No screenshots, alas, so I'm guessing you're again referring to Win key + h dictation as per your previous thread.

    Consider:

How do you get from the first to the second (where it says Listening..)?

    a. Click where you want to enter text.
    b. Click the microphone symbol to the left of the dictation bar.
    c. Speak.

The dictation bar microphone is disabled after a few seconds of nothing happening so you have to repeat that.

Thanks for the tips! At first, I thought about looking in the tutorials - but changed my mind when I thought about dictation being something that no one would spend their time on. I believe Dragon Naturally Speaking became a dead horse (or maybe I'm mistaken). But, years ago, I bought it but could never find the help I needed to use it effectively. Probably tomorrow I'll get to try your suggestions. Thanks again!

I think some things have changed in Windows 10 speech recognition. I now have a bar at the top of my screen that has an icon of a microphone and I can switch between sleeping and listening. I've tried it with bard.google but my speech isn't recognized. With that bar at the top, if I press Windows +H, another longer bar appears behing the first bar and will say listening (or nothing if I don't speaak). But when it says 'listening', it still doesn't work with Bard. Where does it work? Also, when I use Windows+H and it says listening, the small bar still says sleeping. Very confusing.

    And disappointing.

I forgot to mention that both bars are able to float on the screen.

I've no idea what bard google is, sorry.

    Try something really simple.

    Open, say, Wordpad.
    Press Win key + H
Wait for the dictation bar to appear.
    Say
    12345

    Result I get:

Of course, your microphone must be working.

    Check here:

    Remember
As I indicated before, the text field in which you want text to appear must be in the active window.

To make sure of that- click in the text field with the dictation field showing 'Listening...' - or just before you press Win key + h.

    Noted- no screenshots from you...

OK, I used Notepad. But I had to set up the mic all over again. It seems like that's what I have to do - but I shouldn't have to. Using Notepad, after I set up the mic again, speech worked fine. I'm using a Bose headphone with a built-in mic. It's the noise cancelling type of headphone. It seems like speech recognition doesn't work everywhere. BTW, Bard is sort of the equivalent of ChatGPT. You can get it at bard.google.com.

Sorry about no screenshots. No problem. What would you like screenshots of?

Good that it's working - does that include Bard now?

Probably a good idea to keep a basic set of wired headphones to hand just to compare when you have problems.

If all is ok- no screenshot needed.. appropriate ones really help to make things clear- remove guesses and assumptions if used correctly, maybe provide additional information. Easier than trying to imagine what someone's screen is showing..

For example Bard is not commonplace, so one might have been of interest of that together with the dictation bar- and the test case is to try something simple and familiar as I suggested.

Sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner - I'm not a well man. I think part of my issue with speech recognition is that when I'm done trying to get it right, I shut down my Bose headphones so I don't deplete the battery. Then, when I start up SR again, I have to figure out my settings in the Sound app. This time, I'll write down those settings and work from there. I any case, it seems that SR may not work everywhere there's a blinking cursor waiting for keyboard input. Once I get the Sound settings right, I'll take screenshots (if warranted) and send you a summary of where I'm at. BTW, I can't tell if I have a built-in mic on this behemoth of a laptop - can you tell me how to test it? Thank you for your help!!!

    Sorry to hear that..

    • Optional, integrated, light sensitive HD video webcam with Dell Webcam ...
Second screenshot post #5 - disconnect any other microphone and see if the green bar moves when you make a sound.

Rt click the microphone array (yours will likely be named something different) - then rt click, Properties, and Configure.... =>

(The options to the right are of course for the old Speech Recognition feature).

My system has a microphone according to the specs - but I've never used it. Attached is what my Sound app shows. Also, in Device Manager, there is no microphone under Audio and Video inputs.
