How do I set up a microphone

I tried to join a Zoom meeting and discovered I had no microphone installed on my PC. Went to WallyWorld and bought a cheap headphone/mic. Plugged it into the front jack and now don't know how to make it work. I've gone to the control panel and added the headphone. I have Realtek audio for my Bose speakers and they work fine. Do I need to install the headphones somewhere else, so the PC recognises them?

Hi, assuming your headphones + mike have 2x stereo plugs (no pic) and you have plugged them into your PC then if you look here:

hopefully you will see something like the Realtek one at the bottom, and it is set as default (tick).

If your mike works and you make a noise, the green bars will show the signal received.

Rt clicking that offers these options:

Note one is 'disable' - ensure that's not in force.

    microphone

I have my Bose speakers plugged into the jacks on the back of the PC. I have the headphone/mic plugged into the jack on the front of my PC. Realtek HD Audio is the app. I don't get any response on the volume thingy when I speak into the mic. I have one single jack to plug into the PC.

    Thank you for your reply.

If you look at the front of your PC, are there two sockets (one for headphones, one for microphone), or just the one?

Does the one plug from your headphones look like the one here?

Notice the number of metal segments and compare.

Have you checked the ways I showed you that the microphone might be disabled to see that it's not?

    One plug

No, only one plug on the head/mic and one hole in the front of the PC. The mic is enabled. It appears that the head/mic is getting the output of my Win Media music. Do I have to turn the music off for the head/mic to work?

Then kindly post a photo of your whole headset and of the plug so I actually know what sort of thing you are talking about.

Apparently this is a common problem with your PC

Please refer to the Dell community site as this seems to be model specific.
