I don't see why you would have any driver problems with your old Onboard Audio or SB Sound Card they are of similar age.
Some of my audio chipsets are of a similar age, no problems, many years ago instances of the red cross on startup(audio service stopped). From memory these were the maintenance tasks.
You can Restart those services in Task Manager by right clicking > Restart.
Other ways are to sign out of Account and sign back in, in Task Manager Restart Windows Explorer.
Quicker than shutting down and powering up again.
Longer term maintenance task is to minimise bottom right Taskbar/System tray Icons to the absolute essentials. Windows items/any from installed software items usually just a setting in the application.
Some startup items appearing in that area do affect the Audio service starting.
In the Power Options you can temporarily change to a slower startup i.e. Untick the Fast startup feature, for power button. This will check on more things during startup maybe re-ordering them.

In the Search box,type in ---dxdiag ---and see if there are any reports,in particular in the Sound pages.
Also note the Driver version from each page and check they are the latest available,or the only one,depending upon age.

i put the order in for this sound card, it'll either arrive this friday or sooner (depending on USPS), if it doesn't really pan out, ill just return it and get my money back (excluding time spent on it). either in a few hours or tomorrow ill also use the dxdiag tool and see what pops up sound tab error wise. and to be sure, i went into my motherboard's BIOS settings to see if there was any option to turn off onboard sound stuff, and there was no option at all. its an old ass board, so in terms of options, im not completely surprised

That connector you circled in post #6 hooks to the front panel audio on the case.
The connectors on the rear of the sound card connect to speakers, mics, etc.
You can use the connectors on the motherboard or on the sound card. Whichever group you use... is where the sound will come from. It'll be just like your old sound card, only this one will work.
The only thing you can mess up, is if you connect part of your audio devices to the sound card, and the rest to the motherboard.Last edited by Ghot; 25 Apr 2023 at 16:50.

well, i had a bit of a snafu with my sound card at the time of this post, and after uninstalling the sound card software, i set the computer into safeboot (minimal) mode, then after uninstalling all the devices in the "audio inputs and outputs" section in device manager, i put it back into normal mode, and checked dxdiag. it would not detect any valid sound card, even though it was hooked into the system. i had to physically take the sound card out after shutting it down and unplugging it from power, boot it up, shut down, put the card back in, boot it up, then checked dxdiag and saw the system registered it as existing. it installed whatever base audio drivers it always does (either default microsoft or realtek, idk), then i reinstalled the sound card software/driver, and i got audio again
also saw the port on the motherboard where the connector usually goes onto the sound card has a label that said "FAUDIO_1". TL;DR had to get physical (not the bad kind), got sound working again, still waiting on the replacement sound card, hoping it does something good for me

The new sound card is in my computer, plugged in the cable to the thing on the sound card and all that. installed the software for it after making sure to uninstall the old sound card software/driver(s), and so far......it sounds pretty good. I was a bit scared (and slightly miffed) at this being sideways, but apparently it was secured enough that becoming a Leaning Tower of Piza expy isn't creating any hardware/software issues, so far (I tried uploading a picture to here just now taken from my phone, but the system here didnt like that, too many pixels?)
in hindsight, i should've taken a picture of the settings my sound card used, and tried to adapt them to my Xonar sound card software, but i didnt, and now i gotta figure things out from there (at least how to make the music of any video i watch a bit more prevalent than the people taking), got my old setting attached just in-case anyone is willing to help, but fair warning, its sparse because i primarily adapted it from the "Fatality" profile settings (no im not trying and/or making a mortal kombat joke). HiFi mode (what it started out with at least) sounds close, but it needs a bit more tweaking to get it there. The REAL test tho, will be shutting my computer down, unplugging it from power, letting it sit for a few minutes, then booting back up and seeing if the issue i had with the old one persists here, then i can say it wasn't my old sound card's fault at all, but something else i need to diagnose

Go ahead, shut the computer off, unplug it, wait a few, then turn it back on.

and to my enjoyment it does still work. yet i don't want to draw any early conclusions just yet. sure i gave it a few minutes, but what about leaving it unplugged, without power, for hours instead? which is why ill let it be for now, and when i got to sleep, i will shut it down, unplug it from the power, and for extra measure ill unplug the powerstrip its usually plugged into and let all that sit until i wake up in the morning. i need to dust off the power strip either way, thing looks eugh
and if it still works, guess it was the sound card after all.....which is very weird, nothing on the sound card's motherboard looks bent or burnt out, doesn't even smell bad-weird either. not even the pins the connector cable hooked into look bad at all
minor quirk i found out about my new sound card just now: if the sound card software isnt enabled, the speakers show as "Speakers (USB), but with the sound card software running, it says "Speakers (Xonar SoundCard)Last edited by BrokenDaily; 29 Apr 2023 at 12:44.

That sound card was seriously OLD. Sometimes, electronics just wear out.
That sound card was first available in Nov. 2011
12 years old, give or take. And sound cards, due to their price point, wouldn't have used absolute top of the line components. Which all adds up to the fact that the SB sound card was probably just... dying.
Sometimes, electronics parts can just get old and tired. No arcs and sparks required.
