sound problems

just recently the sound would not play.
no sound at all
if i click the bottom one in the image, instantly i get sound.
later- no sound again, until..see above
never used to do this.
NO changes have been made to the computer in a long time.
cannot be a virus as the computer does not connect to the internet.
any ideas?
