facebook messenger notification sound repeatedly playing

ok, I legitimately have no idea where to go with fixing this.

facebook messenger keeps playing its notification sound repeatedly, even when I'm on a conversation window that just triggered said notification.

there are times its fired that sound off even when I haven't had any messages all day(which is utterly strange in of itself).

I've tried monkeying with my device drivers(spoiler...not a good idea when your device manufacturer no longer supports the device), I've obviously restarted the computer, I've even tried swapping speakers(unlikely to be the cause but stranger things..).

I'm at a legitimate loss, and its gotten REAL old.
