Newbie with "No Audio Output Device is installed" on windows 10

    Hi
I have a red cross next to the sound icon at the bottom right of screen and when I hover over it I get a message ... "No audio output device is installed".
Is this a common thing with windows 10.... a "friend" said he knew how to fix it and went ahead and reset Windows 10 and wiped all my personal files.. this is not a problem as I also have everthing on a Mac...(sorry) . However I would like to use the PC (HP Touchsmart 520 -1010uk) from time to time.

Also it can't see my wifi network anymore but just sees a neighbours instead. It does work with ethernet cable connected though. If this post is in the wrong place I apologise. It's my first post.

    Cheers

    Bernard

Hi, your laptop HP Touchsmart 520 -1010 appears to be from around 2012.

What build is your Windows 10- the forum prompted you so we don't have to ask. 32 or 64 bits?

As such you will be aware there is absolutely no guarantee that everything works as you would like if using Windows 10 on such a device.

I can't find its driver page - perhaps you would care to post that... almost no poster thinks to do that, alas.

Were any drivers posted for a 64 bit O/S, or only for a 32 bit O/S?
If the latter, only 32 bit Windows should be installed.

How did you initially upgrade to Win 10? By upgrade or a clean install?

    Similar issue reported here.
How to get beats audio back on HP touchsmart 520 PC | Tom's Guide Forum

    History: (rarely provided by posters):
    - has audio ever worked on this PC with Win 10 installed?
    - if it did, what happened around the time this stopped working?

If everything worked, then problems after a build upgrade, then you may have to stay with an older build of Win 10

a "friend" said he knew how to fix it and went ahead and reset Windows 10 and wiped all my personal files
It sounds as if a clean install may be appropriate, but you may still be missing drivers which you have to take ths responsibility for finding.

Missing drivers (inspect Device Manager and post a screenshot) can be found by
    - downloading the last available version from the manufacturer's site
    - manual search - based on device hardware id (from properties in Device Manager)
    - using - very very carefully- a 3rd party driver updater tool such as Snappy Driver installer if there's no alternative.

    Thanks.

I have the same issue on my Oct. 2021 Vostro that came with Win10 and Upgraded to Win11 and still in warranty. I've done all the usual diagnostics, did a factory restore to Win10, no fix. Then I installed Win11 again, still no fix. I booted to a couple editions of Linux LiveUSB and Hiren's BootCD [on USB Thumb drive], still no adapter found. Drivers downloaded from Dell appear to install but do not show up in Device Manager. The problem hit about a week ago, thought maybe it was a Win11 Update or maybe a Dell system update but appears to be hardware. OEM's Tech is supposed to be visiting any day now, Monday was postponed to Tuesday which was postponed to today, probably awaiting delivery of 'parts'.
