Headphone jack in Dell Inspiron 3793 doesn't work

I have a Dell Inspiron 3793 17" laptop running Win11 (insider build 22572. The problem also existed with Win10 before I started with the Insider program.

When I connect external speakers for a Zoom session, I get no audio. When the speakers are not connected, I get audio from the laptop's internal speakers.

Also, I want to connect an external microphone but there is no microphone port. The scant setup manual says that the port can be used to connect a headset.

Is there an adapter I can purchase that will allow me to connect both headphones and stereo mic?

See if these Microsoft troubleshooters are useful.

Open administrative command prompt and copy and paste:

    msdt.exe -id PowerDiagnostic
    msdt.exe -id DeviceDiagnostic
    msdt.exe -id AudioPlaybackDiagnostic
    msdt.exe -id AudioRecordingDiagnostic

    Ken,

I had that problem in my Dell Inspiron 7779 once when I removed the Dell-supplied audio driver and reverted to an MS one.

I suggest that you backup your drivers before taking any remedial action.
    - This works in both Windows 10 & Windows 11.
Backup and Restore Device Drivers - TenForumsTutorials

You could go to Dell Drivers n downloads - Dell, put in your Dell Service tag and download then install their latest driver.
    - While you're there, check for any Bios updates.
    - Even if you have not reverted as I did, reinstalling the driver might clear the problem.
    - Naturally, there is no guarantee that Dell's Windows 10 driver will work in Windows 11.

You do realise there's a separate forum for Windows 11? There's a link to it at the bottom of this webpage.

    Best of luck,

I use a bluetooth external speaker which also has a 3.5mm socket for connecting a headphones/microphone set.

    There are many. For example,
3.5mm Speaker and headphone Splitter - Amazon UK
    - I realise you are in the USA. The UK link was what I had handy.
    - You could search your own Amazon for Speaker and headphone Splitter and I'd suggest checking the whole product description, QnA & user reviews for confirmation that they work for inputs as well as outputs [not all do].

    best of luck,

Dell's require the Dell model specific sound driver and in most recent PC's (last 4 or 5 years) Waves MaxxAudio (or Audio Pro) for audio jack detection.

Download and reinstall Realtek and then Waves MaxxAudio Pro.

Set this switch on then enter your Dell Service tag
Headphone jack in Dell Inspiron 3793 doesn't work-set-switch-then-enter-your-dell-service-tag.jpg
That will ensure that you are only shown the right drivers for your specific computer hardware rather than all drivers that apply to any Inspiron 3793 models over time [components do change even within a given model number]. Your Dell Service tag is a cross-reference to a list of exactly what was put in your computer when they built it.

By service tag is usually best, but if a PC was delivered with Win 10 and then upgraded to11 for example then the service tag is not the best way.

In this particular case, getting jack detection to work, there is only one audio driver and one MaxxAudio Pro so accessing by service tag isn't required.

The audio jack on the PC is a combo TRRS jack. Will work for headphone, mic or headset.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I really appreciate the community here and all the good information you've passed along

Per some of the suggestions, I've run the troubleshooters and I've reinstalled all drivers for audio from the Dell site for my specific machine. I will try the speakers and microphone.

However, some of the responses to my original post spoke about phantom power for condenser mics. My microphone is a stereo condenser mic and I'm wondering if it can get phantom power from the laptop, or whether I need to provide it. In which case, how do I do that?

It sounds to me as though somebody was joking. We used to send trainees down to the stores to get tins of sky-blue-pink paint & jugs of blue steam.

    Where were these posts?
