New computer, new Win 10, recordings muffled and low volume
Audacity and my older Logitech microphone worked just fine with my older PowerSpec desk top
New computer, PowerSpec747, new to Win 10
Recording with Audacity the recording level is so low, it's inaudible, found Sound (why is it hidden from the control panel, is there a way to tell the control panel to show everything? sheesh... )
and adjusted recording level to 100%
looks like no new drivers
the sound is muffled and still low...
very poor quality
I'd be willing to purchase a new microphone, no surprise, this one is old but, is that the problem?
no point in purchasing a new one, tested, this works great on the older pc with win 7
if the problem is in win 10
are they any settings I missed like, "uncheck the disappointing recording quality box"
In the Search box, type in ---dxdiag ---and go through the sound pages checking for any problems.
In the input page, expand the device entries and similarly see if there are any problems.
Open Device Manager and see if there are any flagged entries.
Might be worthwhile temporarily uninstalling Audacity to see how Win 10's own performance copes.
A couple of things to check:
(Based upon my own experience with Audacity and Win 10)
Back up a step and see if you can get your selected microphone to work in the Windows Sound section of Settings as the default input device. Make note of the name of the device and then select that same named Mic input in Audacity.
In my case, I have a USB camera with a built-in microphone and also a USB Cardioid Mic used for pro recordings.
I have sometimes made the mistake of not selecting the correct Mic input in Audacity. The result is low-level audio that is unusable. (See screen shot)
I tested them, I have the choice of Microsoft sound mapper and Microphone USB
sound mapper might possibly be a bit clearer but, not significantly
but, did some reading about MME, WASAPl
while superuser.com recommends WASAPI, it does in mono only on one choice and won't record with any other microphone option, interesting.
best result is MME, Microphone (USB Audio Device), 2 (stereo)
not as clear as it was on win 7
thank you, your post lead me to more reading
a steady issue, some day I am going to learn my way through GIMP, most of the time I am at the computer, I need to finish something NOW... little time to read and read, and learn... about about what the software I am using...
quarantine sort of retired now (devastation wrecked on small business), time to catch up
and it is fun, except, I don't have the tech background so, often, I am learning backwards...

The inbuilt voice recorder of Win 10 records my voice via mic and saves it as an audio file .m4a.
Is there a free app to convert those voice recordings to text?
Hello all, really hope I can get some pointers here as I've literally spent much of last night and all of today trying to figure this out.
