Start Device Manager, expand and highlight the sound device, right-click it, select "Update driver", then click "Browse my computer for driver software", then "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer". If you see the HDA driver, highlight it and click "Next". You may have to restart the computer for the change to take effect.

All I see is High Definition Audio Device. I'm looking for "Realtek High Definition Audio Device"

is this your motherboard, lattewins? (it's the only "z390e" board I can find)

it looks like Asus only provided Realtek UAD/DCH driver downloads for that board and not the "standard" HDA (non-UAD) drivers.

ask Asus support if they have a compatible HDA driver for your Z390-E board

I've spoke with them before but the representatives seem to be confused and say download the latest audio driver. That led me to here. Maybe I can try again and see if another representative will understand.
