HDMI motherboard onboard audio not present

    Hello there:

I have come across another HDMI related issue to go alongside my older thread.

My motherboard is an older Asus P8Z68 V LX, it is capable of both toslink & HDMI hd audio out.
I have no issue with the optical (toslink) audio, it functions as it should, but the HDMI is not present.
The driver program exe loads the drivers for the audio, oddly the control panel does not appear at all.
Both formats appear in the op/sys sound properties, the optical is limited to 48khz, but all is there, the HDMI properties show *HDCP not capable*, only 2 channels operational & not all of the khz range is there.

The HDMI cable is connected to my (new to me) Yamaha RX-A870 avr. When using my default media player (Winamp) or MPC-BE one tries to play any music file with the HDMI output as the active there is NO signal to the receiver at all.

My graphics card is also HDMI (Radeon) & all audio functions operate fine except for an tv edid issue.
If one goes into the bios to select the output one can select either HDMI or Optical, if one selects HDMI the optical port is still active but there seems to be no HDMI

I've been chasing this problem for 2 weeks no & haven't come across the source of the issue.

The onboard audio is Realtek ACL 887, driver package R2.82.

Has anyone else come across a similar issue with Realtek audio?

    thx

According to the page No sound from asus p8z68-v pro on-board HDMI | Tom's Hardware Forum
you have to disable HD audio in order for HDMI audio to be present.

I take it that you're referring to the setting in the BIOS, for the front chassis output setting?......hd vs ac97?
Having a look at the Tom's post doesn't relate, the HDMI is not the default in either of my system case.

The analog speakers are the default, there is also the optical in there that is used by some of the media players & the Realtek audio HDMI along with the AMD HDMI settings. The realtek HDMI is the only one of the bunch that isn't playing nicely.

Realtek doesn't have anything to do with HDMI and you are forcing the Realtek driver on the HDMI port.

Your graphics driver contains the HDMI audio driver.

You're confusing the graphics AMD HDMI graphic card output with the motherboards onboard HDMI audio (it is only audio), there are 2 methods of delivering multi channel audio, 1 is by the digital optical toslink port on the back of the motherboard chassis & the 2nd is the hdmi port next to the toslink port on the back of the motherboard chassis. These are not related to the AMD PCIe graphics card HDMI output.

You are the one confusing yourself.

Read your motherboard's manual (I just have). Your motherboard accepts 2nd gen Intel CPU --- which has an integrated graphics chip. And the 2nd gen Intel graphics driver comes with Intel Display Audio driver for the HDMI audio. Look at the 2nd gen Intel CPU listings and the various graphics chip that is inside the CPU.

    Sandy Bridge - Wikipedia

Your problem is that Intel only provided Windows 8 graphics drivers for Intel 2nd gen CPU.

You can download the Windows 8 graphics driver zip file (I just have) and take a look at this folder (there's your Intel Display Audio driver for your HDMI audio).

Intel(R) Graphics Driver for Windows* [15.28]

You are essentially trying to force install the Realtek audio driver onto the HDMI port when the Realtek audio chipset was never designed for HDMI (and Realtek audio driver has nothing to do with HDMI) --- of course it doesn't work.

Well when I'm wrong I don't have an issue stating so,
when I purchased this motherboard 10 years I was under the impression that the board did not support onboard graphics.
At the time I was a steadfast non supporter of the option, always held onto the idea of a PCIe independent graphics card that had it's own memory to make use of, so as to not soak up the installed ram.

I pulled out the paper manual that went along with the board & sure enough it does support onboard graphics assuming that an Intel CPU is made use of. My CPU is the i5-2500. So much for the learned sales rep who supplied me the board.

Followed your lead & went to the Intel site & dl'ed the exe program for the onboard VGA driver for W7/W8 and in they went into 10 with no issue.
Now the HDMI functions, having already 2 HDMI cables running from both the Radeon HDMI card & the motherboard HDMI to the AVR there are now 2 entries in the sound support that function.

You might be asking .."why are you doing this"?

The edid signal from the Radeon card is lost when the TV is shut off causing a loss of audio signal to the AVR. When just listening to music files one does not need the TV on, I was hoping that by having another source signal as well to the AVR the audio would not be lost. But that hasn't happened, even with the Intel HDMI active the audio is still lost when the TV is not running.

A workaround might be to use one of the HDMI spoofers. Some of the more expensive ones pass-through the HDMI signal when the TV is on and can provide a copy of the TV's "powered on" EDID while the TV is off.

Here's a really cheap one you might try. You'd need an HDMI switch or AVR to manage the connections between it, your TV and your computer, though. Amazon.com

Here's one of the more expensive pass-through devices:
DVI DDC EDID Emulator with EDID Copy - Video Converters

Note: I have no personal experience with any of these devices. My HDMI devices are all v1.3 or v1.4, so I don't have this problem.

Sadly, the loss of audio when the TV is turned off seems to be a "feature" of the HDMI v2 (including v2.1) protocol, which is required for 4K video. Audio is preserved when using hardware which only supports a version of the v1 (up through v1.4) HDMI protocol. My A/V devices (TV, Blu-ray player, AVR and laptop) are old enough that they don't support v2 (i.e. they don't support 4K video, only up to 1080p). The audio cuts off for only a second or two when I turn off the TV (while HDMI/HDCP renegotiates).

I did purchase one 1080p emulator, it was an Evanlak item, it thru the monitor/TV identities into a state of chaos, scrambled the icons arrangement on the desktop, blocked the audio, so that was sent back.
Another item I came across (Gofanco Prophecy) was very well priced on Amazon (US) in the states for $20 + shipping but it couldn't be had here in Canada by Amazon local. The US dealer wanted $92US for it, just a stupid price, so that was bypassed.

I came across another item (Aten/Vancryst) VC081a emulator (a German piece), this one looked on the exceptional side as it had learning capabilities, but it was just ridiculously priced, $49US (ship included in the lower 48 states) but they wouldn't ship it across the border into Canada for some legal reason.

I found a Canadian dealer for it but their ridiculous price was over $130......... go figure, so my issue is unresolved
