Can’t record computer audio – please help!

    Hi everyone,

Got an audio problem which has me completely baffled, and if anyone is able to help I’d be super grateful!

I use my HP laptop (Windows 10) to make commentary videos (along with a Blue Yeti microphone and Logitech webcam). Essentially these require me to play one video (e.g. from YouTube) whilst I record my commentary on top (with audio of both recorded – usually I film myself using the webcam as well).

Until recently this was super easy – I used OBS Studio for screen capture (which also captured a backup of the original video audio); and the laptop’s inbuilt camera video app (with webcam and Blue Yeti mic) to record myself, the original audio (I play it out loud) and my commentary.

Weirdly this has stopped working and the original audio (from the video I’m commenting on) is no longer recording properly. It still records snippets, particularly around when I’m talking, but is mostly silent. So rather than recording both my commentary and the original video audio, I just get my commentary and occasional snippets (which stop me using my commentary and the OBS Studio audio as the snippets are messed up and don’t fit with the OBS audio). It’s very strange – like audio from the computer is being filtered out (though not that well). Not an issue with the webcam or external mic as I have exactly the same problem when I use the inbuilt webcam & mic.

I can get it to record the original video audio (which I play out loud) by selecting Stereo Mix as my default device, but then I don’t record my audio at all. Or I can select Microphone Array as default device, which records me fine, but I only get messed up snippets of the original video audio. Basically I need to record both the Stereo Mix and Microphone Array at the same time, which it won’t let me do. Both Stereo Mix and Microphone Array are enabled.

Completely baffled by it – didn’t think the computer could filter out its own audio from recordings, when played out loud, even if it wanted to! Thanks for any help!
