You can select 5.1 Surround even if you only have 2.1. Just configure the speakers and only select what you have.

    Right-click on little speaker

I plug the speakers into the green connector on the back. When I plug headphones into the front connector it automatically disconnects the speakers.

Your computer may have configuration software that controls the rear and front connections. You may have to run this software to get the setup you want. Again we can't comment because we need to know your Dell computer's model number.

BTW, my desktop has a lot of configuration possibilities for audio. I used to have 5.1 setup. Now I am only using 2.1.

    Rear:
    Pink - Microphone
    Green - Front (left/right) speakers
    Blue - Side (left/right) speakers
    Orange - Center speaker / sub-woofer
    Black - Rear (left/right) speakers

    Front:
    Left - Headphones (left/right) speakers
    Right - Microphone
