Sometimes, it's better to use older versions of some programs.
Take a "wait and see" approach.

If and when those programs are shown to be behaving, less than above board... actions can be taken

Like for VLC Media Player, I just removed all the files that were trying to access the internet.
For CCleaner, I blocked it's executables, in my firewall, and skipped the versions that had the problem.

On Audacity for example... I'm still on version 2.3.3.0

I found this article helped in clearing up which version will have this new telemetry data which started the whole controversy.

Apparently it's version 3.0.3 which has not yet been released.

Audacity makers clarify data usage – and there’s no reason to dump the editor yet

    @ Farvatten

Thanks for posting that link. I read the whole article (twice), and these are the principal takeaways I have from it:
"Let me put this bluntly: at least based on what we know about the version in question, they’re not tracking anything you need to worry about, they’re not selling any data, there are strict controls over how the data is used, and the software hasn’t even shipped yet. (Suffice to say I’ll download 3.03 when it arrives to double-check – trust but verify and all that jazz.)"
    and
"But if you use Audacity and you’re worried you need to delete it, don’t – not for now, or at least not because it’s “spyware.”"

I'm going to stay on 3.0.2 until there's more and better information on 3.0.3, and I'm not going to waste any time worrying about it until then.
