I think the problem may be that the OP is downloading a source code version of ffmpeg,
I suspect so, too, which is why I sent her back to her source page (https://lame.buanzo.org/#lamewindl) to get ffmpeg-win-2.2.2.zip. From there, it's a breeze getting Audacity to do the audio tracks of MP4s.

I play them (MP4s) with VLC Media Player to see the video and hear the audio, but with the ffmpeg-win-2.2.2 folder on board, there'll be no problem getting Audacity to either Open or Import MP4s to work on audio tracks.

I've been using Audacity for so long my version is 2.0.6. You prompted me to update to 3.0.2 (at last)

If you unzip ffmpeg-win-2,2,2.zip to the \App\FFMPeg sub-folder in the folder where Audacity is installed then it really is a breeze. When you go tp Preferences > Libraries and click the Locate button it detects then automatically, you don't even need to go browsing for them.

    Thanks for the push.....

Okay. You've discovered that you can eliminate "negotiated to the ffmpeg-win-2.2.2 folder, selected avformat-55.dll, OK" by doing what exactly?

After I pushed Locate, I had to browse to my ffmpeg-win-2.2.2 folder, which is inside the same folder my other Audacity files are in. You're saying you didn't have to browse. But that surely can't be because your avformat-55.dll was in a folder you named FFMPeg, while mine was in a folder I named ffmpeg-win-2.2.2. Surely. So, ...

Why would that work for you and not for me? I'm not doubting you, I'm just puzzled. I'm sure that (if memory serves, and sometimes it doesn't) when I pushed Locate, it responded with a ... wait. I think now (just maybe) it gave me a choice between the program finding it and yours truly finding it. I'm not sure now. Did you get a choice, or did the program just find the file immediately after you pushed Locate?

I guess it doesn't really matter. We've shown OP that it can be done, and easily. I hope she comes back and tries again with the new pointers (and, as GHOT pointed out, the right zipped file). I really hope she does.

    Cheers.

My install of Audacity is actually the Portable Apps version, I had assumed that the installed version would be the same. As installed, the folder in which Audacity is installed contains an Apps folder, and in that is a FFMpeg folder with a single file in it : ffmpeg_readme.txt. This says:

Place the avformat-52.dll file and all other library files in this directory and Audacity Portable will use the FFMpeg encoder. You will still need to enable it by clicking into the Libraries section of Audacity's settings and clicking Locate and then OK.

So I unzipped the contents of ffmpeg-win-2.2.2 to this existing FFMpeg folder and the Locate button found it automatically.

Hmmm. Mine is the portable, too. I use portables, all other things being equal, whenever I can, and avoid installer versions. (A body never knows what the installer is going to do, but a body knows exactly where he's gonna park an unzipped portable, and what he's done when he parks it.)

But I don't recall ever having seen that Apps folder. You sure that wasn't a leftover from 2.0.6 and wasn't present in the zipped 3.0.2? I guess that doesn't matter either, but I'm glad it worked so breezily for you, while I, OTOH, had to take three (!) extra steps.

In your first post you mentioned downloading LAME.

    Did you also download FFmpeg?
    Nop

    That was the problem

I still do not understand in which folder do I have to unzip ffmpeg-win-2.2.2.zip

    Ok here's the instructions...

Make sure Audacity is NOT running...

    1. Left-click the link ffmpeg-win-2.2.2.exe and save the file anywhere on your computer.

    2. Double-click ffmpeg-win-2.2.2.exe to launch the installer (you can safely ignore any warnings that the "publisher could not be verified").

    3. Read the License and click Next, then Next and Install... to install the required files to C:\Program Files\FFmpeg for Audacity (or C:\Program Files (x86)\FFmpeg for Audacity on a 64-bit version of Windows).

If you have the portable Audacity, you can unzip to the apps folder in the Audacity folder, if you have the apps folder. If you have the installed version of Audacity, you're better off using the ffmpeg-win-2.2.2.exe and instaling, as suggested above. Just remember that after you have the ffmpeg unzipped and placed (or installed) you have to open the program and go to Edit, Preferences, Libraries, Locate and then you're all set to open those MP4s.

If you have no apps folder (and I have no apps folder and never saw one in the unzipped files for Audacity), just unzip the downloaded ffmpeg file to a folder named "ffmpeg" and put that folder in the folder that contains your Audacity files. Then run Audacity and follow the guide above for connecting the library file avformat-55 to the program.

My version of Audacity is no portable and 32 bits, so I had downloaded and Install ffmpeg-win-2.2.2.exe in the location
    C:\Program Files (x86)\FFmpeg for Audacity

Now How do I import the avformat-52.dll into Audacity?

    Update:
    Here my Audacity lives
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Audacity

    Update again:
Importing is now working only installing ffmpeg-win-2.2.2.exe without add nothing more in Audacity????

Faaaaantastic! The installer works well with the installed version of Audacity.

I'm really pleased that you've got it working now.
