    Agree.

You can also mute the sound with the mouse. Simple left click the Volume icon and click the volume icon there to mute. Also hovering over the icon show volume percentage.

Also, a more sophisticated mouse may have assignable buttons/wheels for volume, mute, play, pause etc., which will show immediately on the OSD...

There's many similar apps to satisfy everyone's preference. I use ClickMonitorDDC to control volume & display brightness.

It also can be configured to show percent setting and allows adjustment with scroll button/mouse-over.
The 62 is volume % level and 26 is brightness % level.

Both mouse and keyboard here - Logitech Craft keyboard, Logitech MX Master 2S, though the keyboard is more effective.

Do consider what the original request actually was. Hover for percentage was exactly not what was asked.

We are presenting other options available for the OP to consider. They can choose to use or not.

    Thanks.

Thanks dalchina - Volume2 is a great bit of software. I'd been looking for a better volume control for ages.

I particularly like how it 'sees through' full screen video, so I can easily adjust volume when watching Netflix etc.
