    How To Change A Setting?

Windows 10 Home.I have a glitch with my laptop that even a repair technician can't fix. It is whenever I remove headphones from their jack, I loose my Caps/Num Lock sound. The technician put a short-cut on my desktop which is this:

    C:\Windows\explorer.exe ms-settings:apps-volume

It takes you to "App volume device preferences"

I just click on "reset to the Microsoft recommended defaults" and the sound is back.
The problem I have is that it shows a long list of file names that have been played. How can I do two things?

    1) delete the list of names?
    2) never have the names show there?

EDIT: I notice that after I restart my laptop and click on the shortcut, the file names have been removed.
    Are they stored somewhere?
If so, where. I wish to erase them.

Can you capture a screenshot of this list?

My windows version is 20H2 Build 19042,928

I have been playing various video formats and have found that some stay listed even after having closed them.
Others show on the list as I play them but disappear from it when I close them.

Why there is a difference, is unknown to me.
Seeing that the list is cleared upon a restart of my laptop, I am more interested as to where this list is written too in windows.
Does anyone know & can point me to it?

When I do the Reset, it says "Your system has been reset to recommended defaults" but the list remains.

    Hi oldfarter,

I have the same feature, as far as the list is concerned using winver 2004. I scanned the registry and can't locate anything definitive, just non-descript binary codes that I wouldn't dare touch.

This audio customizing feature of Windows could be quite useful for some users, when it works as advertised. It allows you to select specific devices for input or output to/from specific apps. I know you didn't ask this specifically, I'm just trying to be thorough.

For instance, you might always choose headphones for gaming or whatever else. After launching a particular app, use the pull-down to select your preferred input/output device and set custom sound levels on the slider. These settings will be retained by Windows and automatically set whenever this same app is launched again.

I'm never a fan of resetting anything unless desperate or necessary. I'd compare it to resetting a wireless router, I've found it necessary but only twice in about 4 years.

The next time you experience a loss of caps/num lock sounds, check the status of this switch. We may be able to find a shortcut, if this will help.

Search toggle keys from the taskbar search and press enter.

Scroll up, just above 'Use Filter Keys' to 'Use Toggle Keys'.

Check the Play a sound... switch is set to on.

If this condition is constant, I'd be inclined to run SFC & DISM checks. If those utilities don't identify corruption, test the behavior again after a Clean Boot.

    1. Are the mpv's streams that are still connected?

    2. Why is your input device Stereo Mix?

1.The mpv's were not connected when I took the screenshot.

    2. I was instructed to do so. Below is what I received from the Asus Warranty Repair Technician:

    From the Warranty Service technician:
    Caps lock audio:
Narrator based caps lock sound was mentioned in the notes you sent.

This was configured to play the caps lock beep, but also caps lock was configured to turn off narrator.
You probably don’t want narrator on anyway due to the large blue box on the screen even if you turn off the text to speak.

The other setting to turn this on is under: All Settings\Ease Of Access\Keyboard\Use Toggle Keys\turn on.

This registry entry was the cause of the sound not being played.
    \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\xxxx\yyyy\PowerSettings\
    ConservationIdleTime,05,00,00,00
    PerformanceIdleTime,00,01,00,00
    IdlePowerState,05,00,00,00

The Realtek driver is causing the speakers to power down after 5 seconds of non-use. This combined with a strange windows bug where the Caps lock key sound que registers but isn’t enough to get the speakers to turn back on.

Any other sound being played first will activate the speakers again, then the sound works.

Bypass method – make the Realtek audio driver listen to itself and disable the output from it.

The device can listen to itself and the white noise is enough to get the speakers to not idle and power down. But by setting the volume output of the listen levels to 0 there’s no sound played.

    Steps to enable or disable:

    1. make certain that "Stereo Mix (Realtek(R) Audio) is enabled
    2. control panel
    3. hardware + sound - Sound – Recording
    4. Stereo Mix (Realtek(R) Audio)
    5. device properties
    6. listen
    7. Playback through Realtek HD Audio
    8. check "listen to this device" and "continue running when on battery power"
    9. levels tab
    10. set to "0"

I have the Toggle Key settings the same as yours.

I also have a Shortcut to it, on my desktop.

    It is: C:\Windows\explorer.exe ms-settings:easeofaccess-keyboard

I have run sfc /scannow which returns this: Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.
Seeing SFC found no problems, I assume I do not need to do the DISM?

I have taken onboard your suggestion of doing a Clean Boot.
I have never done that procedure before so something new to learn. :)
