Windows claims montior has speakers even though it doesn't

    Hello,

I have an Asus VZ239HE-W monitor connected through HDMI. According to the ASUS website, this monitor does not have any built-in speakers.

However, Windows claims it does according to the Sound settings and it has even set it as the default speakers with the model name of the monitor shown. I can not hear anything (even though it's enabled in settings) but when clicking on "Test" to let Windows send a sound signal to the monitor, I can see the level bars going up. The monitor does not have an audio jack plug either.

    How is this possible?

Hopefully installing monitor driver will resolves the problem.

The driver is only for Windows 7. Mind you, the monitor does not have speakers while Windows claims it does and showing hints of sounds playing over the monitor. Is this perhaps a bug when a HDMI is connected to any monitor?

You can install Windows 7 driver on Windows 10.

Is that recommended though? The FAQ also states that the driver won't work on Windows 10.

What I'm merely wondering is why Windows is claiming the monitor has speakers even though it doesn't and whether this is a bug when any monitor is connected over HDMI.

I was given a 27" ASUS monitor a few years ago and it has built-in speakers, does require a cable between the computer's audio out port and the port on the back of it. I'd get rid of it but it's the only one I have with 4 inputs, VGA, DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort, quite handy when working on Notebooks with a broken display.

That is not a driver, it is a Monitor application/software utility.

The fact that there maybe no audio amplifier or speakers does mean you cannot output to it, just not hear it.

Manufacturers tend to cut costs by using the same internal electronics boards but just not solder in the Audio components for those models with no speakers.

You can do your own research on whether the EDID info from the Monitor contains relevant info.

There's indeed a VZ239H-W model which has speakers and looks exactly the same as my VZ239HE-W model which doens't have speakers.

They might have left the speakers in there but disabled it on hardware level if I'm correct?

If you use HDMI or displayport the connected monitor becomes a "sound device" by default even if it lacks the device descriptors of a proper sound device. All GPUs that have those connectors will pass audio signal through.

I have a DELL U3011 monitor which definitely does not have speakers. (DP)
And an LG TV which definitely does have speakers. (HDMI)

    I think @i486 is correct.
When I used to have my old 780 Ti hooked up with DVI-D, and the LG TV still hooked up with HDMI... the DELL didn't show in the Sound page.
