My ASUS 27" has a cable with the Stereo plug on each end for the speakers in the monitor as do my 19" HP Compaq and HP Compaq L2105tm monitors. Both indicate on the speaker icon in the Notification Area when that cable is plugged in, red X when unplugged. The L2105tm also is a touch screen that requires a separate USB cable to be active.

I have a DELL U3011 monitor which definitely does not have speakers. (DP)
And an LG TV which definitely does have speakers. (HDMI)

    I think @i486 is correct.
When I used to have my old 780 Ti hooked up with DVI-D, and the LG TV still hooked up with HDMI... the DELL didn't show in the Sound page.
The monitors become the GPU's peripherals, and if an output capable of carrying an audio signal is used, the GPU tags that monitor as an A/V device based on the output's specs. It's harmless. The EDID metadata can theoretically tell the GPU if the monitor has support for audio, but it doesn't seem to make any practical difference.

Ah that explains it. Thanks for verifying!
