HDMI device detected Windows 10 producing sound but no sound on TV

    Hello,
I've recently fresh-installed Windows 10 Home on my Alienware 15 laptop. I've had it working with an external TV connected through HDMI. before the fresh install. In short, hardware wise nothing should be wrong. Cable, the TV and HDMI jack were working just fine a few days ago.

Since the fresh install, I've got many things to work properly except the sound through the HDMI. I did re-install and rolled back the audio driver many times but still no success. Everything else is up to date and I am out of ideas.

Windows 10 is producing sound fine, I can hear it fine through the headphones when I set the headphones as default devices but when I switch to the HDMI/TV as the default and output device, no sound comes out.

I would appreciate any help. I did try to google my issues but pretty much every suggestions I came across didn't work.

It got solved with a freakish unrelated patch. I installed On screen display application (https://www.dell.com/support/home/en...driverid=41ttf) for my laptop.

This is the strangest solution I've seen yet.

Sorry, nevermind. it did not get resolved. The sound sometimes works but sometimes doesn't. I have no idea what's going on!

Just to fill my curiosity, I tried thunderbolt, same result. However the TV sound works fine with other computers.

I found a "fix", I am testing whether it works consistently or not. It's a very weird sequence:
    1. Open the "Sound" option.
    2. Get to "Playback" tab.
    3. Go to properties of the TV connected through HDMI.
    4. Go to Advaced tab.
    5. Restore Defaults then apply.
    6. Change the default format to 16bit, 44.1kHz then test.
    7. Change the default format to 16bit, 32kHz then test.
    8. TV miraculously makes sound. Hit apply and close all options.

So far this survived one reboot. I will consider this solved if it survives more than 10 without me having to go through this again.

This is so strange, what could cause this?

Playing with input frequency is not a permanent solution, it stops producing sound while booted.

    1. Unplug both ends of the HDMI cable.
    2. Plug it back in.
    3. In the properties window panel of the TV connected through HDMI, go to the "Supported formats" tab to see what audio capabilities the TV reports.
    4. Also keep in mind that, on the "Playback" tab of the "Sound" option, there exists a "Configure" button (to the left of the "Properties" button). To be able to click on it, first you need to left-click on the TV connected through HDMI to select it.

New discovery, if I am watching a video on youtube, and a new video starts after the one that I am watching, the sound on HDMI goes out. However if I quickly switch to headphones then back to HDMI, the sound on HDMI works again. Any clues?

I've done cable checks several times. As for supported formats,
HDCP, 2 channel max, Bit depths 16 bit and 20 bit. Sample rates
32kHZ, 44.1kHZ and 48.0kHz encoded in Dolby digital and Dolby digital plus

The unplug/replug procedure isn't just for checking the cable itself. The HDMI handshake doesn't get refreshed until both ends of the cable have been unplugged before the cable is plugged back in so that's why.

Try doing a clean install of the Intel HD Graphics driver.

Also keep in mind that, if the "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" checkbox is checked, shared playback can be disabled by any app that can support exclusive mode playback. If an app takes exclusive control of the playback device, it also means that the app takes control of the device's settings such as, for example, the sampling frequency used on the device─until the exclusive mode playback session is closed on the device.

Have you tried setting it to 20bit 48kHz?

I've reinstalled Intel graphics several times as well (clean install). I will try to disable exclusive control after rebooting and making the sound to work again. Typically I have to reboot when the sound suddenly stops working.

There is no option for 20bit as an option in the advanced tab even though it says that it's capable.

According to Intel support, reinstalling the driver is not the same as doing a clean install of the driver.

What I meant is that I clean installed it multiple times.

disabling "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device" didn't work. I will try another clean install of the intel graphics just to be sure

Go to Device Manager | View | Show hidden devices. Next, try removing all the ghosted items that appear under the various categories related to audio and under the Display devices category.

Maybe the onboard Realtek HD Audio's "jack detection" feature is interfering in such a particular way that a loose analog audio cable plugged into it might be the culprit? Can you get the HDMI audio to keep functioning properly in Linux?

Okay, I just did another clean install, no dice. Something odd is even after I deleted the Intel HD graphics driver, the Intel Audio remained, so I deleted that too then re-installed graphics driver.

Right now the frequency work-around works until it decides not to then I have to reboot and do the frequency work-around again.

As for loose cable, I don't have one. From linux side HDMI audio works fine. This is just disturbing! What can this be?

I suppose you also already ran the sfc /scannow in an elevated command prompt. I know you said it works with other computers, but try completely powering off/on the TV just in case. Also try installing different drivers (from both Intel and Dell). If that doesn't help either, then I'd wager you've been Microsuckt.
