Sound Issues again on Lenovo Laptop (Sound just goes out)

Hiya Folks,

So I was listening to YouTube this morning on my laptop and the sound just went out. Everywhere. Rebooted, same thing. It briefly came back but then disappeared again. It stinks of a driver issue since I recently did a successful reinstall.

As a Mac guy of many decades drivers are still too vague for me. I now I understand it's good to delete them and reboot. In this case would you advise delete ALL audio drivers or only the ones related to the system install?

Yes I've SFC'd. (I live for that.) I just did a system wide virus check which I will presume pulls up nada. (It's downstairs. I'll change this if I'm wrong.) The troubleshooter was it's usual and reliable waste of time.

Is there a way to check that the hardware itself?

By the way this is the definition of a laptop that is babied.

OH YEAH -- the first sound issue was bluetooth pairing. But it likely (?) didn't involve drivers. Instead I didn't understand I needed to reset the speaker to factory in order to repair.

Don't be so sure....

What audio chip do you have? Is it Conexant? If so, I had a problem with mine cutting out due to poor cooling around the sound chip....

My Toshiba is the L750, it too has the Conexant sound chip and it too looses the sound from time to time. Plug in headphones and you will almost certainly find that the sound is still working - it's just the speakers that aren't. This is an obscure problem and I spent ages searching the web for a solution - here it is:

It's a hardware problem, not a software one. This is apparently a design flaw, the chip gets too hot and shuts down its output stage that drive the speaker. Once shut down it stays that way until you power down the chip. The only way to do that is turn off the PC.

Try plugging in headphones next time the sound cuts out. Do you still have sound? If so, then you may have this overheating problem. Try cleaning out your air vents and fans. If you still have the problem, then post #5 in that thread has my registry tweak that helps a bit. It's not a cure, but it cuts down the time you have to wait (after pausing all audio playback) before the speakers will return.

That is not the app you are looking for. It's called 'System Information'.

(mine was Phizer/Biontech - no reaction, I'm told the second jab is more likely to provoke a reaction than the first, though)

Your last screenshot says Synaptics audio, still worth testing on heaphones after the speakers cut out though.

Oh dear, well it was worth a try. Looks like it may be a software problem after all.


The Vendor ID 14F1 is Conexant, but as Synaptics bought Conexant in 2017 that name difference makes sense.
