    Sound Control Enhancements

Sitting here listening to Nirvana with new speakers and I am looking for the windows sound enhancements which used to be in sound/speakers/properties but I cant find them. There was acoustic controls to 'fake' auditoriums, street, living room, pipes etc. I am trying to get the best out of my Nirvana tracks (mostly off 'Unplugged in NY'). Are they one of these 'cant have anymore but you can find them at'????

Probably due to a driver update so maybe you'd need the old driver to restore sound enhancements. Just a guess.

Personally I don't update a working sound card driver.

Just for info: You can get some effects using winamp. No need to make it default player.

Here it is with Quinto Black CT skin (separate install)

Presets. Or save your own presets.

DSP plugins. I have SRS WOW installed but actually prefer my own settings over that plugin.

Then there's replay gain and preamp options/ sliders.

Some people here swear by Foobar2000 and it seems popular but I ditched it ages ago. Maybe it offers similar effects and others could advise.

    Also I have installed this:

    Download ViPER4Windows 1.0.5

    Check the screenshots.

Thanks Cal, will check out your link first. It mainly experimental, I want to see if and how I can get more out of the tracks.

Had a quick look at viper, thats got the controls I want, so going to look at your other suggestions, then decide. One think about viper though. When I 'set it up' and go into music vids, I cant re enter viper until reboot pc??

What are you using to play video?

Anyway try launching ViPER4WindowsCtrlPanel.exe and make some settings changes leaving the application powered on.

Save your changes as a "Preset" then exit V4W. Launch it again then load the saved preset and leave the application powered on again. Then exit and video should play with sound settings retained. You should also be able to relauch V4W with no need to reboot.

Or at least that is how it works for me.

If you have problems with the version that I linked (which does work for me) you could instead givethis a try:

    ViPER4Windows 1.1 + Windows 10 FIX Free Download

I have not tested that one. If you get the same problem I'd say uninstall rather than trying to figure out what the problem is.

Thanks Cal, will look tomorrow, its a bit late here now.

yes, I am viewing nirvana videos, and other music.

Nearly forgot, winamp is a bit complex and it took me a while to get the controls from 'micro size' to readable but did it. I also had it set for the monitor but when I viewed a second video the screen went into hyper size, so instead of listening and tweaking, I was adjusting resolution all the time. I'll reinstall viper tomorrow an that patch.

Well I just ran that patcher without issues. I guess that you should also run configurator to check which output devices were configured.

    Forgot to mention:

ViPER4WindowsCtrlPanel.exe - right click and run as admin might help settings stick.

    I used:

    ViPER4Windows Patcher 2.0

Then I have this version installed:

    Sound Control Enhancements-version.jpg

I don't remember where I got it so here is the setup file.

    Data package from February 13th. - FileTransfer.io

I ran the patcher no problem.

Then today I've also run this script from an admin command prompt.

    Run cmd as admin, type
    takeown /f "C:\Program Files\ViPER4Windows" /r /d n
    takeown /f "C:\Program Files\ViPER4Windows\LocalPreset.bin" /r /d n
    cacls "C:\Program Files\ViPER4Windows" /t /e /p administrators:f
    cacls "C:\Program Files\ViPER4Windows" /t /e /p users:f

    All works fine for me.

On sourceforge.net there is Equalizer APO, and a GUI app for it called Peace. Equalizer APO can support VST2 plugins such as the (free) TDR Kotelnikov compressor, for example, but I only use that for certain types of listening like background music listening on YouTube or to boost speech if the recorded volume is low. But it also can support Room EQ Wizard (REW), which is the main important feature because then you get to use acoustic measurements. Nothing beats the true investment of treating your room with acoustic treatments (i.e., corner bass traps in every corner including in wall-wall vertical corners and wall-ceiling horizontal corners, and strategically placed panel absorbers to deal with primary reflection points) and analysis. Acoustic analysis is a whole separate science, albeit it really does pay off to learn the basics of that.

The main reason why I moved from Winamp to foobar2000 years ago was because Winamp kept crashing a couple times per day on average for me when the vast majority of files I play are Hi Rez FLAC files. I use it with WASAPI to ensure bitperfect playback, which is probably the exact opposite of what you must be trying to achieve. Real-time audio effects processing like SRS WOW and the old and famous Stereo Tool used to work great for me when I still had my cheap-ish multimedia speaker set, a little over a decade ago. But I moved on since. Getting into palpable Hi Fi with a separate audiophile stereo DAC can do that to a person sometimes. It's what they call 'ear opener' effect. Or getting familiar with the fact music isn't necessarily always about mucking up fine details with, monotonously boomy, bass bloat. (Even, if some types of music recordings sound better, less fatiguing, on the kind of audio gear that doesn't reveal every single last bit of microscopic detail that can also be distracting.)
