Headphones are a "Headset". I use the interchangeably at times - will refer to "Headphone" and next time may refer to "Headset".
Audio configuration in Windows 10 does distinguish the two.

My example is Bluetooth but the principle is the same. With Bluetooth 4.0:
Headphones=Bluetooth Stereo (stereo audio with no microphone)
Headset = Bluetooth Hands-Free AG Audio (mono audio with microphone)

Mono audio with a microphone is a Bluetooth 4.0 limitation. Wired headset don't have this limitation. For wired:
    Headphones=Stereo audio with no microphone
Headset = Stereo audio with microphone

Note some headphones include an inline microphone as an option.
The difference is that headsets have the microphone built into them.

I use a new headphone now. Not the Sony. I posted a link below.
    Amazon.com
Bose QuietComfort 15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling Headphones
The best-performing around-ear headphones from Bose. Significant noise reduction. Lifelike sound you expect from Bose. A fit that stays comfortable for hours. An additional cable with inline remote and microphone is included for convenient control of select iPod, iPad and iPhone models.
They mention iPod, iPad and iPhone. Does anyone know if this type of connection will also work with a Windows laptop?

The Bose you linked doesn't state which wiring standard for mic connection. It notes that first sold in 2015 and if made for a cell phone it may be the old wiring standard. I notice it also requires one AAA battery.

Do you have a friend with a newer PC that you can try the "headset" on to see if the mic works on theirs?

My sister has a newer laptop. I tried the These Bose headphones on those and it worked fine by using the external mic. I also tried them on my dad's laptop which is a really old HP. It also worked fine on that too. It even works on my PS4 controller. It just doesn't work on my computer. I also just "Factory Reset" my computer to see if it will solve the issue and it didn't. So i assume that the problem is in the hardware since I reset all the software.

I also have a Bluetooth thing called "Airmod" that i can connect to my headphones. But the mic quality on that is garbage.

I see a post on the Dell forums about this. Hopefully one of the Laptop experts will solve the problem.

In ref to Headphone/Headset, I come from recording studio use and in a recording studio both terms are used interchangeably.

Can you post the link to Dell forum? Also if i hadn't told you already, I "Factory Reset" my computer and the mic problem still persists. So from this I draw a conclusion that its a hardware problem not a software problem.

Give it time. It is a users helping users forum, just as this one is. A couple of the regulars are on the west coast, so still early for them.

After reading comments on the Dell forum, I'm still questioning the mic wiring compatibility. Both the Bose headset and the laptop are from the 2015 era but that doesn't say they both conform to the same TRRS mic "standard".

One suggestion is to use a USB adapter and that would avoid any wiring compatibility problems.
