I have a gut-feelings these are going to be exactly what I wanted. Sometimes my instincts are pretty good If they aren't, for any reason, what I want, I can return them One thing I didn't mention is, that the volume skips from around 96, to 100. It doesn't just go 96, 97, 98, 99, 100. I haven't figured that one out yet. If it's these USB speakers issue, I'll know, but if it keeps doing it on new speakers, then I'll have to dig a bit deeper. I'm not saying I should ever have to have it up to 100 like I do these, I sure hope not. Be nice to just have something more normal.

I'm not very tekkie as you guys can tell, at least not with audio issues. My brother is the pro on that but he's too hard to get hold of, lol

For the record, I don't disagree with Navy here,

It really depends a lot on exactly what you are looking for. Are the $35 speakers I recommended going to sound better than a pair of unamplified speakers plugged into a USB port? YES! Way better! Are the $35 speakers I recommended going to sound as good as $100+ speakers? Absolutely not. But it is a balance of what you want, need, and use vs. how much you want to pay.
You don't need exotic setups or expensive speakers to get good sound. It also depends on what you wish to use the speakers for. If you need them to simply listen to YouTube clips or occasionally listen to music while surfacing the net, an inexpensive pair of 35 dollar speakers may be the right ticket. If you're looking audiophile and listening to hi-res music, higher priced speakers may be in order.

My setup is exotic because I'm an audiophile buff who rips his own CD's, lots of them being audiophile editions.

So what did you end up getting?

I got these: Logitech Z313 as a Bday gift from my Dad of all people almost 20 yrs ago. The clarity to loudness ratio is superb....and works awesomely for my needs....ie music, video's and gaming.

Sound is subjective but yeah the Emotive speakers are nice. Regardless I'm happy with my A5+
Of course that's true. Audio is part science, part subjectiveness. For stereo music listening I don't use my Emotiva speakers, though. I don't really need them for that because I also have a pair of passive floorstanding speakers hooked up to a separate stereo power amp via a (non 'bus powered') USB DAC, I digress...

If I may ask, is there an audiophile or HiFi related thread on here somewhere so that maybe we could talk some more about that particular subject? Thank you.

Like a phono input, the USB interface merely supplies a signal to be amplified by an amp. I have a USB DAC that supplies the signal to my 50 RMS (75 peak) powered speakers with their built in amp.

Here the USB merely supplies a signal to the DAC which then converts the signal and sends it to an amplifier - in this case the speakers. The DAC itself does not have an amplifier; thus the need for "powered" speakers.

Point? The signal coming from any USB interface should be plenty for an amplifier to handle. BTW my uses the 2.0 USB interface, though I have it connected to a 3.0 port.
I was referring to usb powered speakers and the maximum power they can deliver compared to mains powered.

You can create a thread in this forum. Or you can create it in the Chillout Room.

That said, I'm not interested in debating the merits of sound since it's such a subjective subject with lots of opinions.

Right, and I'm saying "maximum power" is more about the amplifier itself and less about the USB connection. The comparison with the phono input is that while the signal is extremely low (you need a phono amp to amplify the signal), it is the amplifier that allows you to play the sound as loud as the amp itself will go. The same applies to a sound device connected to a USB port.... you need an amp to play the sound.

Now if one is arguing signal to noise, that would be applicable, that's a different argument.
