The upgrade to version 2004 destroyed all Sound

I have tried all the suggestions i could find with no success. I obtained a Dell Optiplex 990 and had a clean installation of Version 1909, Build 18363.1082 installed. Still no sound. I originally had Realtek Drivers installed. I deleted the installed Realtek drivers and installed some older ones. No success. The current Realtek driver is R2-82. Before the upgrade from 1909 to 2004 I had excellent stereo. Now nothing except the tiny PC speaker. I hope someone has the answer to pairing the correct Realtek driver to version 1909. Thank you.

Hi, appears to be from around 2012, some drivers to Win 8.
    https://www.dell.com/support/home/en...ex-990/drivers

I suggest you try drivers from the manufacturer's site as appropriate, and block updates to them if they work.

As Win 10 isn't supported, resolving issues is, of course, your responsibility.

Before the upgrade from 1909 to 2004 I had excellent stereo
Build 18363.1082 installed. Still no sound.
These statements appear to conflict. Did you or did you not have sound with 1909 installed?

If 2004 doesn't work with this older system (and various issues do occur with 2004 - see article in the News section and comments following for Known and Resolved issues and for articles on 2004 updates and other threads) then revert to 1909 and stay with that, blocking Windows Updates (Tutorial available).

I'm sorry I didn't clearly explain the situation. My original computer was a Dell Omniplex 3020 on which all my programs and files are installed. It was the PC that was upgraded from version 1909 to version 2oo4 Build 19041.572. That was when I lost all sound. I had tried every suggestion I could find to fix the problem without any success. I obtained the refurbished Dell Optiplex 990 and had Version 1904 Build 18363.1082 installed. It was a clean installation with a bare minimum of files. I was planning to transfer the operating system via LapLink to the 3020. However, I have no sound on the 990 either. I have not been able to find compatible Realtek Drivers. I last tried Realtek Driver R2-82. No sound. I can freely experiment with that installation without fear of losing programs or files. Any help to solve this problem would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

On the Dell forums, when we see users lose sound after Win 10 upgrade, reinstalling the Dell sound driver has fixed most of the user problems. It must be the Dell driver due to the many Dell custom implementations. Generic or non-Dell supplied drivers usually do not work or work properly.

Many new/newer Dells also come with Waves MaxxAudio and in order for that to work you must have the Dell supplied Realtek driver for the specific PC model.

the Dell Optiplex 3020 machine uses customized Realtek HD audio drivers as fireberd explained, Richard J.
latest Dell specific Realtek HDA driver for Optiplex 3020 is v6.0.1.6086 A01 but you can try the v6.0.1.6127 A12 version on the Optiplex 3020. do NOT use R2.82 nor generic Realtek HDA drivers on this Dell computer.

as for Optiplex 990 the R2.82 (6.0.1.8186) Realtek audio drivers may work on there but do realize that Dell did not test the Optiplex 990 for Win10 compatibility, so there are no guarantees that recent Win10 versions will work properly on the Optiplex 990 computer.

Go to Dell and grab the last one they had for your model and downloaD IT . Before installing it go into the properties and put it in Windows 7 compatability mode and then install it and see what happens . I had to do this to a few things that are old as my desktop is a 2011 lenovo . Did this with a 15 year old scanner and a 10 year old TV card and it worked perfect. Something to try . I am running 2010 Realtek sound driver too and that works perfect with the equalizer and all the adjustments that came with the original win 7 install . This looks like it was the last one for that model.

On all the Dell machines I have used getting sound from the tiny internal speaker indicates that there is a functioning Dell audio driver in place but that the PC is not aware of external speakers being connected. When using a non Dell driver the small internal speaker has not been active at all.

EDIT oops failed to notice that most of this thread is not exactly current
