Stereo Mix on new HP ENVY 17 -- is there any possible way to do this?

    Hi everyone.

I have a new HP ENVY 17 computer, purchased late September. Stereo Mix is simply missing.

I have tried all of the usual fixes:

    1) Update all drivers
    2) Get latest drivers from HP site
    3) Show disconnected / disabled devices n Sound Control Panel
    4) Install that 2017 Realtek HD CODEC from the HP site

None of this worked. I believe from other discussions on this site that they've simply removed Stereo Mix from the driver.

It is important to me to have Stereo Mix, to where I will return the computer if I can't make it appear. I have tried software solutions like Virtual Audio Cable in the past, and they don't meet my needs (which I won't bother getting into).

Is there any possible way to force Stereo Mix to appear as a feature here? I appreciate any help.

    I have Windows 10 Version 1909.

Dan, here is an article with a number of possible solutions. Most you have already tried, but take a look at the very first one. Apparently have the mic disabled can lead to this problem.

Let me know if this helps at all.

Thanks, but unfortunately I have tried all of those already, and none worked.

Laughably, HP tech support -- escalations, no less -- claimed it was a matter of Windows corruption, and that I had to "restore Windows" to get it working (even though it was a brand new machine).

Then they told me to call Microsoft if that didn't work. Idiots.

I'm likely to return this soon if I can't find a solution.

Have you tried Realtek drivers from some source OTHER THAN HP?

Such as from Window Update or Realtek direct?

My home-built PC is currently using the following, and I do have stereo mix.

I had a lot of stereo mix issues on Win 7, but none on Win 10.

I have not done anything heroic or unusual to get it working. The driver shown below came either from my original Win 10 installation of several years ago or from subsequent Windows Updates. I have no idea if it has changed since my original installation, but stereo mix has worked since Win 10 was first installed in 2017.

Okay, so I played with this for hours tonight and made an interesting discovery.

I am able to make Stereo Mix show up if I use the HDA 146.1 MB Realtek generic driver on MUC, but my audio simply doesn't work!

If I try the same version of the driver, but the DCH 10.8 MB instead, then my audio works, but there is no Stereo Mix!

Anyone have any idea why this is happening?

    I'm using 6.0.1.8978.1 from MUC, here: https://www.catalog.update.microsoft...x?q=6.0.8978.1

Windows 10, version 1909. HP Envy 17 (new purchase).

    Device INTELAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_10EC&DEV_0245&SUBSYS_103C875C&REV_1000\5&23d70924&0&0001

I also noticed that in the DCH version, it has Headphone under Playback in the Sound Control Panel, but that item is missing in the HDA version.

Totally stumped here. Can anyone explain this?

Some PC vendors disable functions such as stereo mix. I once had a Toshiba laptop and it did not have Stereo Mix and that was a common complaint.

The only way to get stereo mix was to use a USB connected sound "card" and external speakers.

    Agree with Firebird.

You are subject to the whims of Hewlett Packard.

They can included or exclude functionality at will on their proprietary motherboards.

I assume they have deliberately prohibited stereo mix in exchange for some type of mutual back-scratching from some other power in the tech industry............easy to some up with examples of who that might be.

I ran into similar problems on Windows 7 with a particular motherboard brand. I spent 35 bucks on an external USB sound card just to get stereo mix with that board.

You can continue to hack at the problem and may succeed with some weirdo driver you might find on the net.

You just have to consider the hours required to continue fighting versus changing motherboards versus external sound card versus get an entirely new machine, etc.

    Dan,

Since you don't say what you are trying to achieve I don't know if an alternative approach would satisfy you or not.

When I first lost Stereo mix I started using ActivePresenter for recording what comes through my audio system.

I found these links useful in getting to grips with it -
Tutorials - ActivePresenter - Screen Recording & Interactive ELearning Authoring Software
    ActivePresenter Community

I do not know if there is anything suitable in the Windows store because I do not use the Store much.

    - - - - - - - - - - -

When recording just audio, I follow the instructions to record [Record movie / Streaming video] and set the checkbox for Record system audio in the recording interface that appears.
    Then, at the end, I

    1. open up the interface,
    2. right-click on the audio track waveform shown near the bottom of the screen [the waveform itself not its label],
    3. select Export to file,
    4. save it as an .mp3, .wav or .ogg.

I can also use ActivePresenter's editing capabilities to trim out any silences at the start & end - I click in the timeline itself rather than the waveform display and then drag around the start-end markers that appear.

I need live Stereo Mix. The third party software solutions like Virtual Audio Cable create a latency with my voice (I'm using the microphone, Skype, and YouTube), which is very distracting.

Any ideas why the HDA driver shows Stereo Mix but the whole thing has no audio, and the DCH version has audio but Stereo Mix is missing?

Whilst I have never used VAC, my understanding is that VAC creates virtual audio cards then passes the signal from one to another so I am not surpised that delays creep in.
ActivePresenter, on the other hand, merely monitors audio & video card outputs so it does not add in any extra audio card processing steps. I have certainly never witnessed any delays.

I find this very odd and have no solution to propose.
If Device manager displays the audio card with that driver it means that it has accepted the driver as appropriate for that hardware.
    - Was the driver supplied by HP? OEMs often customise audio cards so a driver directly from the audio card 'maker' may not be entirely compatible with the hardware supplied with your computer.
    - Is the driver described as being compatible with Windows 10?
    - Does one of the
    Device mgr,
    Sound, video and game controllers,
    <audio card>,
    Details,
    Hardware IDs
match one of the Hardware IDs listed in the driver's .inf file? If the driver is supplied as a cab or an exe then you can generally expand the installation file to find its .inf file. You can also find the .inf in your driver backup - Backup and Restore Device Drivers - TenForumsTutorials

This normally just means that this driver has not been written to include Stereo Mix.
    - Stereo Mix is a property of the driver not of the hardware.

I'm sorry I cannot be of more help,
    Best of luck,
    Denis
