I want free software recommendation for converting .iso files to .mp*

I have some .iso files that I wish to convert to .mp3 or .mp4. I wish to have the ability to use these files independent of third party programs. I have been unable to convert using VLC Media Player. Either I am doing something wrong, or VLC Media Player does not support this type of conversion.

    What do you recommend?

Thanks in advance for your replies.

I don't think you'll find any software to do that.

If the .iso file contains .mp3s, then what you need to do is mount the .iso file (Windows 10 will do this automatically if you open the .iso file in File Explorer) and then you can simply copy the .mp3 files to another location. If the .iso contains music files in some other format, then you will need to convert them to .mp3 AFTER you copy the files to another location.

Regardless, the first thing you need to do is to mount the .iso file so that the files contained within can be accessed via the file system.

Just do as post #2 suggests.
    In Windows 10 File Manager.
Right click the .ISO file > Mount.

Look down the File Manager for a virtual DVD drive something like 'DVD drive (E:) ' or something like that.
Then you just copy the .MP3 files to wherever you want them to be.

I'm trying to help a friend here. I attempted to mount the file by right clicking it and choosing mount. This PC displayed it as a virtual DVD player. I believe the resulting file type was UDF. VLC Media Player will play it with no problem, but not convert it. (I will see if using File Explorer and copying the file yields a different result.)
I will have to check the friend's file to confirm the file type. If it is indeed UDF, does that present a problem?

    Hello @caffeine,

A UDF is a Universal Disk Format profile.
Is the disk something they bought or something they created themselves?

    udf format at DuckDuckGo

If I needed the audio information from that file and it plays in a program I'd use something like Total Recorder that can be set to record anything being heard from the speakers or headset, save as a desired format such as .mp3.

The origin is unknown at present. I will have to ask.

    Hi there
    Questions

    1) are these iso files actual multi media files e.g audio / DVD etc or are they "udf" that means they can be accessed as data files via file explorer

    2) if they are audio files then displaying them will probably display contents as a set of files with prefix .cda - you can get these files by ripping the audio cd - plenty of free ripping programs around to do that == then use any free conversion software to convert the music files to any other audio format if the ripping program doesn't rip to the format you want.

    3) if DVD then KODI will play the iso directly - no need for any conversion program although Handbrake might work -- it's a bit complicated and can be slow though. If the DVD is a commercial one then you'll probably not be able to use free software as these are usually encrypted and I don't think you can get de-cryption programs (which usually need libdvdcss or some other de-cryption library) in them. The old Slysoft DVD ripper software could remove css and regionalisation so iso would play on vlc etc.Not free software though.

    4) if udf - just extract the files and convert with any conversion software.

Note some DVD files are .vob format - especially if the video was created with DVD-RAM discs -- anybody remember those !!!

    Cheers

I did a quick check, and I will explore that more fully.
anything being heard from the speakers or headset
Here is a quick question. Does that mean that it records what is actually heard, or does it record the output that is sent to the speakers or headset?
