My HP desktop has been running happily with windows 10 but the latest windows update has killed my sound. Have tried all the instructions as per the HP virtual assistant; but still no sound. Need help, my knowledge of software is very limited.

    Welcome to tenforums.

What is your full Windows build number? The forum told you how to do that and asked you for it so we don't have to keep asking. Thanks.

Which, for you, is the latest update? This is different for different people who may be running anything from 1809 to 2004, and Insider builds.

When you know that, please find the thread on that update for your particular build in the News section, and post the link. Read the 'Known and Resolved' issues in that article- is there anything about sound there?

What is your sound driver? Realtek? Conexant? ....

Loss of sound on my HP desktop

Hello wonderful people; Just read the reply from Steve C and Dalchina; Very helpful, will follow the advice!
to answer Dalchina questions - my latest update is 2004 the driver is Realtek. as a matter of interest my desktop machine is HP model 500-193 ea and this problem has occurred before with another previous update. It does not (at least at present) effect my laptops, an HP envy and have another smaller laptop HP Stream the student version.
Will post my results as soon as possible.
in the meantime Many many thanks buddies!
    Regards Dougalldog

Hi, here's how to get your full build number:

    winkey + r, winver

2004 is just a major build... it has many build numbers starting 19041 as you can see here:
lost sound after Windows 10 latest update-1.png

    - where you can read about your latest KB..... update

The latest update is shown here:
lost sound after Windows 10 latest update-1.png

    or here:
lost sound after Windows 10 latest update-2.png

There have been problems for some with 2004 with Conexant sound, but you have Realtek.

This appears to be a desktop from around 2013/14- is that correct?

I'm unable to find a precise reference to it- please post its drivers page. The nearest model I've found is
    https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03933829

Consider running the appropriate HP support tool:
    https://support.hp.com/us-en/topic/d...gory=computing

Can you find it in any of the HP Win 10 approved lists?

Loss of sound on my HP desktop

    i Dalchina,
You are a wonderful source of knowledge! having checked through all the points you have highlighted, have visited the HP website and carried out yet more checks and also viewed the HP articles on build status and the magic date of 2013 shows that any device purchased prior to that date will possibly have issues with build 2004 with its automatic update process; originally I posted incorrect detail of my system please see amendment:-
Product HP 500-139ea Serial no. CZ3453YOX Product no. D7F79EA#ABU
windows 10 64 bit version 19041.45a. Cannot remember when I purchased this machine but believe it is more than 10 years ago. Which puts it at risk of problems. Heyho, remember the adage - 'time and tide waits for no man' guess my beloved Desktop has entered the realms of 'too old buddy! go and take REST'!!!
Reading your final piece of advice - seems I either search the web for drivers to suit or put my hand in my pocket and provision a new machine! Think as my two laptops are fairly new, they are capable of meeting the demands of the latest updates without any problems. So hopefully they are able to provide a good service.
Question - apart from trying to find suitable drivers to match the latest updates, should I revert and stay at an earlier version of windows 10 or perhaps change to something via Google and the likes, thus this machine steering clear of Windows 10. Many moons ago, I served in the Royal Navy and had a posting to HONG KONG 1967 - 1969 - where all numerical 'computing' was invariably done on an ABACUS by the traders and fast and efficient accurate system.
Many thanks buddy, looking forward to your reply Kind Regards Dougalldog

Hi, thanks, I bet those traders with abacuses weren't plagued by duff updates and changing specs... and they still worked when the lights went out ...

You're right, with a product that old HP takes the drivers off line, so it becomes questionable what MS might supply with a given update or major build.

If you have a Windows build that works with it, be grateful, heave a sigh of relief, and block updates.

I'm not quite sure if you mean sound died when you upgraded to 2004 or after a 2004 update.

If the former, and it was within 10 days by default, you can 'Go back to the previous build'.

If the latter, try uninstalling 1 or more 2004 updates.

If you had a driver update (check Device Manager for that device) you may be able to roll that back,

Loss of sound on my HP desktop

Hi Dalchina, many tks for reply; it happened with the latest updates to version 2004. Was using the new Microsoft edge and all was well; will look at rolling back to previous state where sound was working. The fault occurred approx two days ago. The desktop has been a real comfort to use and reluctant to part with the 'beast;', so will endeavour to regain sound.

will come back as and when to give final outcome; it may take a while but be rest assured will ensure I follow the forum protocol and advise on resolution. In the meantime thank you to all for your assistance Regards Dougalldog

    Hello All,
Have posted a message re HP no longer has updates for my beloved desktop HP Pavilion 500-139ea. Not sure where it has ended up - just to confirm, am awaiting assistance from my local Tech wizard to see if he can help, also have looked at the enticing offers on the web of new/update drivers etc. and they all have a 'sting in the tail'!
Have declined their offers and tentacles on my wallet and await my buddy to advise.
Have a good day wherever you are. A real kind bunch of wizards. Will return in due course to advise outcome.
Take care and stay safe Dougalldog

If in fact it was the feature update to 2004 from (e.g. 1909) that killed sound, then you have by default up to 10 days to 'Go back to the previous build'. That can be extended to 60 (see tutorial).

After that expires, you can only return to 1909 by
    - restoring a disk image of the 1909 build
    - clean installing 1909.

Have you check to see if the correct output source is selected? Right click on the speaker icon and select Open Sound Settings.
