Audio pops and tears on Youtube and any type of video streaming site.

I must say that I've looked into this problem for quite a long time now. Here are some of my observations.

Upgraded HDD to SSD, thinking it was the dying HDD that was the cause of the problem but that did not help.

Discovered LatencyMon and gave that a shot. As long as I'm not doing anything related to youtube or any heavy websites, it stays in the green for all 4 dials. Whilst listening to music on groove and typing this post, latencymon is all green. I now proceed to open a new tab and open Youtube and BAAM, latencymon is now all red and the audio just popped. I play a video and 2 of the dials go off the chart.

It gives these 2 .sys files which I presume are the culprit to the pops.

Another thing I did is connecting the laptop via ethernet and when I do that, latencymon stays in the green even when I go on youtube and play a video at 1080p, which it would normally not play without popping every 5 seconds. Offline videos also work, no pops or tears. It seems to only happen when I'm connected to the internet though wifi and streaming or loading a heavy website.

My guess is that my wifi card(Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1030) is just too old and might be running on legacy drivers for all I know.

My question is whether there is anything I could do to fix it OR do I need a new wifi card, something like an Intel 7260HMW?

If anyone could help me with this I'd be really grateful to them. 😄

Wi-Fi is a known cause of your problems. There can be others but in your case it looks like Wi-Fi.
Whether a different Wi-Fi interface will help??? You can try one - buy it from a site that has a liberal return policy in case it doesn't help.

    Hello @ASH101

I'm not an expert but if I were you, I'd first try to see if WiFi driver works properly (if you didn't yet).
Right click on taskbar WiFi icon => Troobleshoot problems, checking WiFi:

If that couldn't help, I'd try to uninstall/reinstall current driver.
Right click on Start menu => Device manager, expand Network adapters, right click on WiFi device and Uninstall it. Restart connecting to internet via Ethernet and let Windows download/reinstall proper driver:

Note: If you have any antivirus active/installed, other than Windows Security, it's better to disable/uninstall it.

Also, are you sure about sufficiency of WiFi signal on either your PC and modem/rooter? Have you tried to connect another device like a phone or PC to modem/rooter via Wifi and see what happens?

And of course, before try anything, better keep a recent backup of your system on an external disk, using a backup app.

@fireberd Due to the whole covid thing, idk when I'm going to be able to buy a wifi card but I do think it is indeed wifi related.

@HeM The drivers might be the reason for this because it is running on compatibility drivers, which are basically windows 7/8 drivers that were ported to windows 10, and they were installed by windows from a fresh install. That's why I'm probably going to buy a more modern wifi card on ebay, something like an Intel 7260 which I know has windows 10 specific drivers.

    Thank you for the suggestions

I cannot understand that. Has driver been ported to system after upgrade from previous Win7/8 or has been installed by Windows 10 on a fresh clean install?

If it has been ported on an upgrade (or manually, by you), you may try completely uninstall it and then let Windows download/install the proper driver (if exists), which should be impossible to run in compatibility mode.

Note that when uninstall a driver, Windows does not completely uninstall it. Usually, it keeps a copy of it in system (for security reasons) and on next restart (or after a while) installs it again, from its library and not from internet.

So, try to uninstall the driver with no internet connection, restart, stay with no internet to see what happens. If indeed there is a copy, it should install it again even without internet connection, perhaps after a while. If there is no copy of driver in system, connecting to internet and updating Windows (or automatically), driver should be downloaded/installed to system.

Ιf downloaded by Windows driver (which is impossible to run in compatibility mode) does not work properly I think, there's nothing to do about and you better buy a cheap USB WiFi device. But first, as I've mentioned, test your modem/rooter.

@HeM This is what I mean:

I've looked on both the OEM and Intel website for updated windows 10 drivers but nothing apart from windows 7 and 8/8.1 drivers, and the fact that faact that it is signed by microsoft hardware compatibility publisher makes me think that they just took the old drivers and pushed them over to windows 10(I might be completely wrong here and if I am, forgive me ).

    It seems, you're absolutely right!
Looking at a few Win 7 drivers (of minor importance) which I had to install manually (Win 10 does not provide them), I've just seen and learned about this "...Compatibility Publisher".

So now, it's me I have to thank you cause I learn something from you, before I close my eyes...

    Thanks a lot!!!
