Connect a line level audio feed to laptop headset connector

Am I right in thinking there is a microphone input available on the headset 3.5mm jack on a laptop?

If so, I would like to feed in a line level signal which I understand is at a much higher level, so some adjustment would be needed.

This link How To "Convert" A Laptop Microphone Port To Line In - YouTube suggests its possible but I am unconvinced.

Also do I need a TRRS plug to go into the laptop in order to access the mic input?

If it is a Combo jack, yes, some Laptops have a separate mic input 3.5 mm jack.

There are potentially 2 types of TRRS Combo jack used by different manufacturers. OMTP and CTIA.

The Mic input may detect the higher level of a line input and adjust accordingly. You would certainly put Mic Boost to zero and lower the Volume slider.

That video is a bit confused, the Mic input is mono as it would be for a Line input as well. i.e. L and R would be the same.
So if you wanted stereo line input it would not do. You would have to add a USB dongle thingy.
