    Microphone problem

I have a Dell desktop, WIN 10, OS Build 10.0 19041.388. I have speakers, which work correctly. I have a microphone which doesn’t work properly. It is plugged into the rear mike port ( 3.5 mm pink). I have speakers and mike enable. I have “allow access to the microphone on this device” – on. I have “allow apps to access your microphone” – on. I have Skype and Voice Recorder turned on.

But the mike does not capture whatever I say. I can even scream into it. I get no output. I checked the speakers by playing some videos to confirm they work. They do. I have updated the driver for the microphone. No help.

The mike icon does appear in the notification area.

I don’t know what else to do. BTW. The Mike and speakers were from a computer several operating systems ago. Maybe XP, or before. When I try the mike on Win 7, I scream in. On playback, full volume on speakers, I can just barely hear my test.

The Mike is Realtek(R) Audio. Driver provided by Microsoft
The speakers are Realtek(R) Audio. Device manufacturer is Microsoft

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks

Right click on Loudspeaker Icon bottom right > Open sound settings > Input > Device properties >
Turn Volume slider up > Additional device properties > Levels Tab > Microphone boost (up to +36 dB on mine).
    Apply > OK.

There are other routes to that Microphone Boost.

    Hi!

Almost the same problem here. Old DELL notebook, originally with XP or Vista, now running Windows 10 v1909. The microphone does work, but it is so bloody noisy that it is nearly not usable at all. If you want to keep a Skype conversation short, this is your dream machine !

I have already tried to install new drivers, but Windows 10's are newer. Microphone Boost? Only makes problems worse! Turn off fan in a totally silent room (lamps off, no electrical device plugged in): no effect.

No idea what to do so far.

    Hi,
Have you tried going Start - Settings - System - Sound - And look for Choose input device
