I was installing new AMD display software. I had to run the installation three times.
Now when I click on the speaker icon it says "Speakers (3- Realtek(R) Audio)". Where did that number 3 come from? I do not have 3 speakers.
The second time I ran the installation it said 2. Now on this third time it says 3. How can I fix what has happened

If you allow realtek to send a different audio stream to the front headphone jack, then you have 3 different outputs:
1) your motherboard's rear speaker jacks
2) your computer case's front headphone jack
3) your HDMI monitor with speakers
If you have sound from your speakers, don't worry about it, there is nothing to "fix".
I do not like this annoying change.. it never used to display that before.
Hopefully someone else will help further.
Did you apply the 2004 Windows upgrade? Any driver updates? Maybe a bios update? Basically whenever something on the hardware/ driver level changes Windows re-detects the device and since such a device already exists it adds a number to the name. It has happened countless times to me too, last time after a bios update the sound card was re-detected and the number 2 was added to it's designation. To my knowledge there is nothing you can do about it, you will have to live with it.
It is reassuring to see that there is someone here who has also experienced this.
I sure hope you are wrong about that, though. I hope that sometime someone will show up here who can help even further (thank you a lot, though.) Read my opening post again to see what installation/update made this happen.
Eventually, you will find someone who doesn't know what they are talking about, giving you some kind of vaguely worded advice, and you are going to follow them because you don't know any better.
And you are going to end up without any sound, or without the use of microphone --- so you are going to be stuck at home without the ability to skype with family and friends.
