you may simply try device manager sound video and game controllers Realtek audio , click it click uninstall, uninstall driver check box. and reboot, windows will reinstall the driver, you may have to get the driver from manufacture if you loose some audio functionality. this may fix it, it may not but has in the past for me, fixed this. but if you have windows 2004 is a whole new ball game so like i said may or may not work., one other thing you could try is renaming the sound you use to be able to do it in all devices but i have not seen that function since windows 7 and 8 you may research that if what i said don't fix it.
