    Sound problem

I just purchased a Dell Latitude E6400, refurbished, yesterday. When I watch a video (online or DVD) it makes a buzzing sound every few seconds. I've updated drivers and even uninstalled and re-installed them. I've tried every suggestion online that I could find, and nothing works. It happens on VLC and Windows Media Player, so it must be a problem with the laptop. Is there anything I can do now?

Boot from a suitable live boot disk e.g. Linux and see how the sound is then. That's independent of your Windows installation (and internal disk). If ok, you've established confidence in the hardware.

You can find live boot disks readily.

That's an ancient laptop from around 2008- is that right? If so, no guarantees on it running Win 10 successfully, and you may have to identify a driver responsible for this and use an OLD version not the 'latest' -because it's an old machine, you see.

You can of course run LatencyMon (free) and see if you have latency problems, but further identification is not easy.

Did it come with Win 10 installed?
Have you done a clean install yourself?

Familiarise yourself with its driver page and make sure the BIOS is the latest available.

It may be it can't run Win 10 beyond a certain build...

Is it possible to get Windows 10 to work on an E6400 laptop? | NotebookReview
Note comment about it running Win 10- and the date of that comment.

    I searched for
    Dell Latitude E6400 "windows 10"
    - a useful trick with old machines.

Wish I could help, I have 2 of the E6410 14" Notebooks [originally Win7 but Upgraded to Win10] and haven't encountered the problem. Does it occur when using a headset or only in the speakers? Does it occur when playing an Audio CD?

It happens with the speakers as well as external speakers and headphones. Yes, it occurs with audio CDs as well. Anytime I need sound, whether offline or on.

Yes, I tried that. I've tried everything. This post is my last ditch effort to see if it's fixable.

I don't know how old the laptop is, just that it's refurbished. It's all I could afford. It came with Windows 10 already installed and activated.

    Thank you for your reply.

I suggest you need to read through my post, not just take one point.

Given that a user reports it working with an older build of Windows, what build did it come with, was the sound working then, or did you update it after purchase and then find sound was a problem?

Given the age (via CPU) of the PC have you considered the built in soundcard may be going?

And BTW note most of the users in that notebook thread said their laptop worked well with Windows 10.

    From another page ....
turn off and unplug the devices that are placed in proximity to your buzzing speakers. If this manoeuvre has resolved the problem, switch those devices on one at a time to find out which is the culprit. Once you are done with that check, make sure you keep your speakers far away from the device that triggers the buzzing nuisance.

    Hi,

My Latitude E6400 works fine, I use it at my work playing music all night and never had a problem. I bought it refurbished too, with 1 year guaranty. If that's your case too, you should ask for a repair or even better a refund.

It's an old laptop, with no problems with Win 10 but certainly has problems with nowadays, heavy for its graphics, web.

So, if there is a guaranty try to give it back. This is my suggestion...

Thanks- out of curiosity, given the problem from 1803 mentioned in one thread I found, what build of Win 10 are you running, and have you had to do anything special as regards drivers?
