No sound after resuming computer from standby/sleep mode

    Hi everyone,

Since I last updated my graphics drivers, I have has an issue where my sound refuses to work. It acts like it is working (sound settings show the sound is supposedly happening, I just don't hear it). This can happen from start-up of the PC, or when the PC goes into standby/sleep mode and I resume using my PC. To fix the issue, I have to restart my PC.

I have tried reinstalling the graphics card drivers using express install and a clean install.

Any help or advice would be appreciated, many thanks!

I have a ROG Maximus Hero VIII motherboard.

Since you upgraded graphics the video High Definition Audio got installed. If you are using HDMI for video but the regular Realtek for audio, you need to disable the Nvidia HD Audio in the device manager so Windows uses Realtek. When an HDMI cable is used Windows automatically shifts audio playback to HDMI.

Thank you for the response! I am using HDMI for video for one of my monitors, so I tried this and I had absolutely no sound. Had to enable to NVIDIA HD Audio to get sound again. Maybe I missed something?

Just to verify, are you using HDMI for PC audio or using the motherboard speaker jack on the rear motherboard I/O for audio?

I have both a displayport and a HDMI port used for the two monitors. The monitor playing audio is using the displayport.

OK that says you are using the HDMI audio.

Returning from sleep and doesn't work is probably something being turned off in your Power Plan. For testing, set your Power Plan to High Performance and see if it helps.

I switched to High Performance, let the display turn off, woke the display up and the sound was gone. I apparently have set it so that the PC never goes to sleep, so it isn't a problem with the PC sleeping.

A new discovery is that sound can come from my other monitor after the displays are turned off/on start up. They both use NVIDIA High Definition Audio, but the main monitor refuses to play audio after.

Is it worth uninstalling and installing a previous version of NVIDIA graphics driver, as the one previous to this didn't have an issue, and seeing if that works?

As the old NVIDIA driver worked OK, give it a try. If it works great, if it too has the problem then it will confirm something other than the video driver is causing it.

Since I use my PC for my recording studio I use High Performance and never sleep. I power my system on in the morning and its on until I close down in the evening, Hasn't caused any problems. May use a small amount of electricity but thats all.

Have you checked in the device manager to see if the 'Roll Back Driver' button is available? It might streamline your test.

I have updated the driver to a previous version (Thank you for the advice on how to do it W10 tweaker, but I didn't have that option!) and it claimed I didn't have an audio driver installed.. which was what was probably causing the intermittent problem.

I'll reply in either a few days to say I have had no further issues and this fixed it, or if the problem persists and I require more assistance. Thank you both very much
