    I tried both methods.
With the first one i get the same results as most of you guys: 5.1 selectable but not working. It's the same as stereo or even worse.
The second method is confusing me as hell...
At first i didn't know with options to select in the apo-driver, just tried some i thought might be good to have...
I certainly disabled the "driver signing code" via gpedit.
Still it shows me this when i try to forcefully update my "Samsung" device with the driver in the package:
Force HDMI to carry 5.1 Dolby or whatever-screenshot-2021-01-12-103747.jpg

When i try to install Dolby home theater 4 it just tells me "DHT cannot be installed" and closes...

I am now at my wits end.

I would love to get this to work with your help guys because you seem to know how its done.

    My setup:
PC via HDMI (nvidia graphics card) to Samsung Q60 via ARC
From Samsung Q60 via HDMI to Sony BDV-E4100 Home Theatre System

Maybe another way, buy an HDMI switch with spdif Toslink and or Coaxial Dolby sound output. They are pretty cheap on Amazon, etc...
Run HDMI cable from Nvidia card to the switch, Hdmi from Switch to the TV, Spdif audio cable from switch to your dolby sound system coaxial or Toslink optical input.

The switch will look like a Dolby capable device to the Nvidia High definition sound hardware in the Nvidia video card.

At least I think it will.

And your audio system will recognize the audio input, I think your is Toslink. Make sure yours can get Dolby surround by way of that sound input, which it should be able to do.
This one is high rated, affordable and many edid selectable options for output.

Even if you did get it working because you're going PC > TV > HTS I believe you will end up with an audio delay as I don't believe the BDV-E4100 has eARC, so you might have to try a splitter as @sdowney717 has suggested.

To update the driver you're clicking on the wrong one - it's the one listed under "Sound, video and game controllers".

Once that is installed, in the FX Configurator (from the APO driver) select your "endpoint" at the top of the screen, click "Product Config Tool" on the left, select "Dolby Home Theatre v4 (HDMI/SPDIF)" from the drop down then hit apply.

You should be able to install the Dolby app after that.

If you go the hardware switch route, research all the options carefully as many switches wont do what you want, some have low ratings. I bought one and had to return it, but the one I linked looks good. My switch Amazon is out of now... I got it because my sound receiver supports coaxial and Toslink, and I did not have to buy a toslink cable then.

No Edid switches on it. I did modify my HDTV driver to support dolby 5.1
which I dont know if I still need that or not. My first post still has the modified HDTV driver I used at the very bottom of my post which tells the nvidia card, the TV supports 5.1 sound. Things keep working for me sound wise.

I dont suppose swapping a different HDTV would make any difference for a test of my system, but I could try that and see if my switch still works. I got a switch because I have 3 HDMI sources, and the TV only has 2 inputs.

First of... Thank you guys very very much for your kind and amazingly helpful suggestions.
I was fighting this issue from time to time again to no avail... Took a lot a time already... days.
I am very grateful for your advice.
I am gonna try what fatguy666 says. If thats not gonna work i'll have a look at such an hdmi-switch that sdowney717 showed me. Thank you very much again for preselecting something that should do the trick. Very helpful.

Does your TV support Dolby Surround?
See that INF file I created tells my PC nvidia card can send Dolby surround down the HDMI cable. It works like an EDID override, without that I would not get a Dolby surround output out of the TV RAW coaxial output port.

see the system looks at what HDMI device is plugged in and only sends the audio it knows it can play. My stereo TV can only play stereo, but can pass through Dolby Surround sound, but the windows system does not care, hence the EDID over ride was needed.

The other thing I had done was enable the motherboard realtek sound chip to output Dolby surround 5.1 out the motherboard sound port, but I dont use that anymore. Dont recall any sound-video syncing issues, but it is a possibility.

That is what I remember, its been a while but it all still works.

From that linked switch on amazon, here are EDID settings for various outputs.

    Question:
Is the edid used for audio only, or is it for video? my hdmi outputs are connected to 1080 & 4k tvs. is it to differentiate resolution? or audio only?

    Answer:
    Hello customer,
Our 4x2 HDMI Matrix Switch,4 in 2 Out Matrix HDMI Video Switcher Splitter +Optical & L/R Audio Output EDID setting could adjust the video resolution as well audio setting.
The specific information are as follows for your reference:
"0000" Copy the EDID of HDMI OUT 1
"0001"Copy the EDID of HDMI OUT 2
    "0010"3D 1080P 2 CH LPCM
    "0011"3D 1080P 5.1 CH (LPCM/Dolby/DTS)
    "0100"2D 1080P 2 CH (LPCM)
    "0101"2D 1080P 5.1 CH (LPCM/Dolby/DTS)
    "0110"3D 4k 2 CH (LPCM)
    "0111"3D 4k 5.1 CH (LPCM/Dolby/DTS)
Noted: the dial switch to dial downward is 1, dial upward is 0.
    Hope this could help you.
    Thanks a lot. see less

Thanks to your advice i was able to pull it off to install the DHT 4 and select dolby digital in the sounds tab.

If i run the little playback button for the test sounds it only plays left and right speakers.
But if i run the Netflix app i actually got a working 5.1 sound

Is this gonna work now in games too? I am almost so happy i wanna dance...

Thats exactly why i thought your guide would do the trick for me. Nothing else helped and there was always something different in other forum posts and their solutions.

Maybe it doesn't work for me the same is because i don't use the motherboards sound-system but the nvidia audio driver with the HDMI port my graphics card (1080 ti) provides.

The TV is capable of both, dolby atmos and dolby digital. Even dolby digital +. But that is not supported by my sony-sound-system.

At first i wanted the pc to recognise the sony-sound-system trough the tv but that was just not possible.
So i thought your method is the one to go.
Tell fu** windows that the tv is ofc only stereo but is able to pass trough the 5.1 signal to my sound-system.
So just put out the 5.1 regardless of what the TV is regognized with and let the sound-system handle it.

I can't believe that "trick" would be so hard to accomplish.

Netflix is working with 5.1 and the sound seems not to be delayed in the slightest. Working great here. as it should.

Having working surround sound really makes a nice improvement over stereo. I boosted my rear speakers as I like to hear more surround.
