Sound only going to monitor (HDMI)

    Hello!

On a fresh install of Windows 10 my sound works fine. Then when I install the drivers and utilities that come with my motherboard (MSI Z370I) I loose the sound and it appears to be sent to my monitor despite me changing it to "Speakers (Realtek(R) Audio" (which has no speakers). Screenshot below.

Any ideas how I can send this to normal speakers? (Headphone jack to motherboard)

    @RH618,

Could you just verify whether you looked at the Advanced sound options section? From your screenshot:

If you have already checked this, my apologies. It's just the only thing that comes to mind at the moment.

Just noticed something else in your post:

… despite me changing it to "Speakers (Realtek(R) Audio" (which has no speakers).

It may be routing the audio to an alternate output because it is not detecting anything connected to that output. If you connect speakers, does it get routed to that set of speakers then?

Otherwise, you may have to actually disable the HDMI audio to prevent audio from being routed there.

    This looks okay?

I have tried disabling that monitor channel, rebooting and then the sound comes from nowhere... Only when it's on HDMI do I see sound bouncing around on the level indicator...

No idea why my Razor mouse is on the list!

    Thanks for the help.

...I have speakers (also tried headphones) connected. Also before this problem (before MSI board utilities&drivers) it worked fine so im fairly sure the headphone jack is okay.

Hmmm, that all looks good. On that same sound settings page, if you click on "Troubleshoot" under the master volume slider, does it successfully play sound?

Next, the drivers that you are installing - are they the original drivers that came with your motherboard or did you download the latest drivers from MSI?

If they are not current drivers, you want to try downloading the latest audio drivers for your motherboard from MSI.

If even that fails, try uninstalling the drivers and allow Windows to find the best drivers available like this:

    Open Device Manager.
Expand the "Sound, video and game controllers" category.
Select the Realtek driver by right-clicking it and then select "uninstall device"
Check the box that says "Delete the driver software for this device" and then click "Uninstall"
At the top of Device Manager click on "Action" and then "Scan for hardware changes"
It should install a driver (maybe not the latest, but one that should work).
Test to see if it works.
You could then go back to the same place (the "Sound, video and game controllers" category), right click the audio device and choose "Update driver" followed by "Search automatically for updated driver software". If it does find and install a newer driver, test again to see if it is working properly.

    Thanks again for you time.

I have tried all of that with no result. However I think I have an idea as to what is going on but have no idea how to solve it:

    - I install fresh Windows and all works fine
    - Then install my board and gpu drivers
    - Then problem with sound only to HDMI

Is it possible that sound on my gpu is overriding my board sound? It would make sense!

Just tried hooking the monitor up using DVI-D port instead of HDMI to try and get it to switch over to headphone jack. Also didn't work.

Also thoughout this whole thing it has always been a problem to play the test sound on the speaker channel.

    Many thanks!
