    Annoying audio popup in top left corner of screen for Audible

    All of a sudden, I'm getting popups for controlling audio volume in the upper lefthand corner of my desktop. These dang things cannot be moved or resized or minimized. They're just there, hogging up screen real estate. Not only that, they push the volume down to zero and will not allow me to adjust it.

    I've seen multiple posts on the internet (including this on on Windows 10 forums) about this problem occurring when you run a video in Chrome, so I applied the recommended fixes, for example, disabling media session services:

    Code:
    chrome://flags/#enable-media-session-service
    This helped a little, but the problem keeps coming back and now I'm getting the same issue when I play audiobooks in Audible, which presumably, has nothing to do with Chrome.

    I begin to suspect that this is a Windows 10 issue, not a Chrome issue.

    Can anyone tell me what the heck is going on and how to fix this?

    The Bar is a top level overlay window on the Desktop.

    You can disable it by installing HideVolumeOSD (1.2)

    - - - Updated - - -

    You don't need to let it run in the System Tray either. After installation, you can exit the application from the System Tray,
    then save and run the reg script I've created to invoke either, from the Desktop right click context menu, at will...

    Copy the following code into Notepad, save as a .reg file and run it:

    Code:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DesktopBackground\Shell\Volume Bar-On Screen Display (OSD)]
    "Icon"="DDORes.dll,-3011"
    "Position"="Bottom"
    "SubCommands"=""

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DesktopBackground\Shell\Volume Bar-On Screen Display (OSD)\shell]

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DesktopBackground\Shell\Volume Bar-On Screen Display (OSD)\shell\001flyout]
    "MUIVerb"="Hide"
    "Icon"="SndVolSSO.dll,-120"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DesktopBackground\Shell\Volume Bar-On Screen Display (OSD)\shell\001flyout\command]
    @="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\HideVolumeOSD\\HideVolumeOSD.exe\" -hide"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DesktopBackground\Shell\Volume Bar-On Screen Display (OSD)\shell\002flyout]
    "MUIVerb"="Show"
    "Icon"="SndVolSSO.dll,-124"

    [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\DesktopBackground\Shell\Volume Bar-On Screen Display (OSD)\shell\002flyout\command]
    @="\"C:\\Program Files (x86)\\HideVolumeOSD\\HideVolumeOSD.exe\" -show"
    Note:
    Just make sure the Target of either command is proper on your PC...

    "C:\Program Files (x86)\HideVolumeOSD\HideVolumeOSD.exe" -show

    For awhile I thought I had the same problem but turned out the Notebook I got some time ago had keyboard keys for the adjustments I just had to keep my fingers off and use the Notification Area setting. Fortunately most Notebooks require the Fn key plus another key to make the change.

    Installed HideVolumeOSD but I still can't make the popup go away

    After installing HideVolumeOSD I got a tray option to turn off the OSD popup as expected. At first, this interesting tool seemed to work, but now, the tool no longer has any effect. The popup keeps coming back whether I have HideVolumeOSD checked or not.

    Version of HideVolumeOSD

    I tried both versions of HideVolumeOSD.

    The behavior I'm seeing is so pathological that I begin to suspect that maybe I have a virus.

    In particular:

    • Even when the large audio volume popup goes away, a smaller version lingers and won't go away.
    • When the popup appears, it pushes the volume down to zero. If I raise the volume again, it pushes it back down to zero.
    • Windows sometimes get stuck in the task bar and when I hover over the icon of a running app, instead of displaying the app in a tiny window above the task bar as usual, I get flashes of the little window and I am unable to maximize minimized apps that are stuck in this way.

    Yeah, many apps, especially UWP or PWA apps, make the stupid thing buggy....

    I have a Google Play Music Player for Desktop; it does all kinds of wacky stuff with that...

    Spotify Player does funny things too...

    Most common apps and players work okay though.

    That looks like Groove Music App volume control. If that's the case you can just install other software for audio playback.

    Here's a screenshot from AIMP. The arrow points to the volume slider and you can move the window anywhere you like.
