USB Sound, or lack of it

I am having an issue trying to get my USB PnP Sound adapter to work. I see mic levels changing on the Sound Device tab, don't hear anything. I have changed a number of settings, but can not get the mic and sound playback to come together. Is there something written down that explains how USB PnP Sound is "supposed" to work ? I have tried this on both Win10 and Win7 with the same result, but it works fine without USB PnP on my old Vista laptop.
    Thanks

    Jack

See this article https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/...o-devices-on-t You may need to update the drivers.

I had actually found that page earlier and done a driver update, but obviously I did something wrong, as it still did not work. This time it did it a slightly different way, it prompted me to install the USB PnP Sound Device and now things seem to be working.
    Thank you !

    Hi jack63ss,

I run a USB DAC on my system without issue. What you need to do is check Sound settings from the Control panel. This way you can see all the options and which should be playing....

As you can see my Teac DAC is using USB and is selected as default. Basically wherever the green meter is running that's where you need to set the default to.

Also, where possible try to use a USB 2 port as I've found (at least with my DAC) a USB 3 / 3.1 port causes my sound playback to be erratic (skipping).

And yes, if you have drivers for the device do make sure you install them. My USB DAC requires ASIO drivers.

    Let us know.

I find the whole USB driver issue very confusing. I had my mic plugged in, Windows detected it correctly as USB PnP and I made it the default in the Sound tab, but it wouldn't work. So I went thru what people suggested, including deleting the driver and allowing Windows to reinstall it. The problem is that what gets installed is the Composite USB driver. Once I read "install the device specific driver" for the 3rd time I went and found a 3rd party USB PnP Sound Driver and installed it. That was the one that actually fixed the problem.

My major gripe is that people sell USB devices that come with NO documentation, and they just assume you'll figure it out. And I get it, as Doc Costs $$. However, I would think Windows would be smart enough to know there is a USB device attached that it does not support and tell you to find a driver. Not where to go, just "go find" one because the device is not supported.

Anyway, Thanks for All Your Help. You will make Karaoke at my daughter's 30-something birthday party a success.
