Previous discussions with hints, comments etc
No Stereo Mix In Sound Control Panel
    Stereo Mix no longer appears.

There are many more if you search the forum..

    However note: (comment from Lenovo)
SolutionSymptoms #1 and #2 were caused by a design change agreement between Microsoft and the audio chip hardware supplier. The new change drops the support of mixed-stereo function and direct playback of microphone. The change in design calls to have these function implemented in application level in future. The goal of this design change is to begin standardizing the audio industry. The design change affected all PC vendors worldwide. In the future, Microsoft and audio vendors expect individual applications developers pick up these functions.

I've tried that VB Cable thing, but it doesn't work for me.

I've had Stereo Mix on this PC before. No idea why it's disappeared, or when.

I'm getting fed up to the back teeth fighting the system.

I think it's time to look for a replacement computer.

    Stanley,

Your new computer might not provide stereo mix either.

What is it you are trying to accomplish? Online recordings? If so, this might be a solution for you - My ActivePresenter ditty - TenForums

If you use Realtek, some suggest downloading the HD audio codec (currently 2.82) directly from Realtek.

I find this fails (very slow); try
Realtek HD Audio 2.82 driver download

No idea why it's disappeared, or when.

The Optiplex 780 is not supported by Dell (no drivers). Dell has drivers for XP/Vista/Win 7.
    The sound chip is
Analog Devices ADI 198x Integrated HD Audio

Best option is to get a Win 10 and Stereo Mix supported sound card and use that, if you have the 780 version that will support adding a PCIe card (It looks like the minitower version MAY have one PCIe slot). I work the Dell community hardware forums and this is a frequent issue with the old Legacy OptiPlex line.

It won't work if you don't use the correct settings.

Then it should show up as a device in your sound recording software. I don't have CoolEdit Pro but it works for me in Audacity or any other software that records sound.

    Example:

Other suggestion: Unistall sound driver and install the one from your computer manufacturer's website.

Dell no longer supports this PC.

The infuriating thing is that I had Stereo Mix on it. Don't remember what hoops I had to jump through though.

I have downloaded and installed Realtek's audio driver, but in Device Manager, Sound, video and game controllers, I have High Definition Audio Device, but in its properties it says that the Driver Provider is Microsoft !

    I'm confused.

    Is it hidden/disabled?
