You have a headphone/microphone combo jack. You need a splitter to split the headphone output and microphone input.

What is the model of the Dell laptop? But, it looks like you have the same as I have on an Inspiron 15, 5577 (gaming) model. The jack on mine is a headphone (or external speakers) jack.

On mine, when I plug into the jack I get a pop up asking me what I plugged in.

Have you got Dell Audio installed (right pic)? Most of my audio configurations are done from there. As you can see I am using headphones. Even though speakers and headphones are treated as one, for jack purposes they are recognised separately as an icon when each device is plugged in.

Still waiting for the Dell model number. Different models have different options and jacks. Since it has internal speakers its an AIO model.
