I figured it out and now need a safe free source to download music -I can convert to MP3
The music I have downloaded so far from 2 discs works great in the Honda 2017 CRV EXL.
So can you provide a safe download source?

Three general sources, depending on what era and style of music you like:

    archive.org

    blogs

    Usenet

As always, your best friend in this world is Google.

Start using it to search obscure song titles and see where that leads you.

You'll get an education within a few dozen hours of playing around like that---depending on your perseverance.

Most popular and semi-popular stuff is on youtube in one form or another, but you will have to go well beyond that if your personal taste in music is far off the beaten path. Frank Sinatra, yes; Frank D'Rone, not so much; Frank Ottersen, even less.

    Hi folks

just another suggestion -- easier too IMO

If your car has Blu tooth availability -- simply use and pair with the phone and play music from the phone. If Car doesn't have blu tooth then use a blu tooth receiver (very cheap) and plug into car's AUX --if your car has a USB input it certainly will have an AUX in. Don't connect by cable the phone's headphone socket to the AUX in as you don't want wires getting in the way of your driving.

Advantage also of using Blu tooth and phone is that you can also listen to Internet Radio as well even when no public Wifi on the road - 4/5G works brilliantly and Audio doesn't eat up much bandwidth.

Great Free app - Tunein -- absolutely zillions of Free Internet stations as well as national Radio plus local stations from almost every country in the world. Tunein works on Android -- probably iPhones too.

Great fun listening to say KUSC (L.A Southern California) while in a snow covered part of Iceland and hearing the announcer say "Todays high will be 98 Deg" --- in Real measurements around 30 deg !!).

For Windows tunein can be installed as an addon to VLC and it works --have fun with Free Internet Radio !!!

How to Listen to TuneIn Radio in VLC - Make Tech Easier

For ripping CD's if you must -- the old WINAMP is still brilliant -- and it tags the tracks automatically too - and you can rip to mp3.

Personally I wouldn't bother with USB sticks for in car music any more --phones have much better capacity, much greater flexibility and you don't (usually) lose them as small USB sticks. No worry about formatting problems or playback either.

    Cheers

    Thanks Jimbo
All of that is great info.
I am trying to avoid sing the phone that is why I was going to the stick. I wanted to put more songs on it and although you and others have given great ideas it is my short coming that prevents me from going further.I have no trouble with cds to s the stick but cannot seems to be able to download songs to desktop so I can get them on the stick.
Like Kyhi said there is Firefox and YouTube but I cannot quite get the knack of downloading. I am trying to avid cost so maybe that is my problem. Should you be able to go to some sites for free and download songs to put on the stick even if yo have to rip?
Pandora indicates this is possible but I do not know how to do so.

    Maranna:

    A few points:

There are many applications that will let you download from youtube. Most are free.

Often, they will work for months and then stop working, because of coding changes at youtube. Nothing you can do about that when it happens other than looking for another downloader or getting an update for the one you have.

Youtube stuff is usually mp4 format--a video format. Even though the file may be purely sound, no video.

Some downloaders will let you download the mp4 as an mp3. If not, you can convert after the download.

There are certain websites to which you can enter a link to a youtube mp4 video and they will convert it to mp3 and offer you the download. I don't use these type of sites. I use an application.

I am currently using 4k video downloader.

You DON'T have to rip anything. The file should be playable as downloaded.

For blog sites, you shouldn't need anything but your browser and the hopefully provided password.

Archive.org offers files to you in mp3 or FLAC form. A direct download. No password required. No software required. Just search their database---by artist, by year, by song title, etc.

Thank you for that. I am looking to download and put songs on the stick for free.
Could you please direct me a bit as I have spent countess hours with Google - I can rip to MP3 and the stick plays well. but this was with some old cds of mine around the house. I needed a better supply of free songs.
You are saying I can put these on the stick without converting. I hope they play in the car which is a new 2017 CRV.
For example how do you download from Pandora or a site similar to it. I see no provision to do that?
Should I check to see if it is MP# so it will be compatible with the ones already on the stick?
I am an old guy and not too skilled with this new techy stuff so coud use a bit of direction. Once the stick is fairly well loaded I'll be all set. You use a down loader but I don't know what that is so that may be the reason I cannot grasp how to down load a song from a site.

    Maranna:

    Follow this as an exercise:

    Go here:

Community Audio : Free Audio : Free Download, Borrow and Streaming : Internet Archive[]=mediatype%3A%22audio%22

Enter this song title in the "search this collection" box: Liebestraum

    Hit the enter key.

Wait a few seconds until some results show up.

Poke any of the results with a mouse.

Scroll down the right side till you see "VBR MP3".

Right click it and select "save link as".

Save it to the folder of your choice.

Download should take a few seconds.

See if you can play the download.

Repeat the process with other song titles or artists of your choice till you get the hang of things.

    That's the procedure at Archive.org.

Other sites, such as Pandora, will have different procedures. Sometimes requiring membership. Sometimes requiring passwords. Archive.org requires nothing.

It did work. I now have to figure out how to remove the announcer's voice in the beginning.
Is this an example of a down loader? If so I coud just Google down loaders and see what happens. maybe I will Google MP3 down loaders. Thank you very much for the help. Obviously I needed it.
