Barring a hardware problem, go to the Device Manager, Sound, video and game controllers section.
I don't know what sound "card" you have as there are many "G Series" with different hardware. But whatever you have such as Realtek, Conexant, etc., uninstall the sound "card" then restart the PC and when Windows starts it will detect and reinstall it (refresh it). Then check for headset audio.

Here is mine for example. The AMD is for HDMI audio and the Tranzport is a wireless controller for my recording studio.

Hi, apologies for the late reply I didn't realise my thread had been merged(?).
Do you mean to uninstall this one?

No, AMD High Definition Audio Device is for HDMI audio.
But, I see you do not have the hardware sound driver, only the generic, basic function, Windows installed High Definition Audio Device.

Go to HP and get the correct sound driver for your specific model (assuming this is a Windows 10 computer).

I went to the HP website to obtain the drivers, went through the process of identifying model etc, however when it comes to stating my OS, the only options are for Windows 7 and 8, no option for 10. I am unsure of what to do now.

laptop not detecting headset microphone - solved by enabling popup

Hi there, I just experienced maybe the same thing. I have solved that at least on my laptop.
First, open the Realtek HD Audio Manager. Click on Windows icon and type "Realtek" then the "Realtek HD Audio Manager will show up. On the right you will see a word "Analog" and yellow icon like Folder icon. Click that yellow small icon. The dialog "Enable auto popup dialog, when device has been plug in" will show up. Check that to enable and press OK. Once you enable that, every time you plug in new device, the dialog that give us options to select what kind of device you just plug in will show up.
    Now, plug in your headset.
Here you will see options like Mic in, Headphone, Speaker out, and Headset.
The mic on my headset was not working is because last time I select "Headphone" and then disable the popup dialog. So, only headphone is working.
When I enable again the popup dialog, then I select "Headset", my headset mic is working. Even, the Microphone options on the "Sound setting" is only showing one mic.
Go to Sound settings to double check that your headset mic is working.
So, be careful on the option "Headphone" and "Headset". Choose the right one.

I had the same problem and my fix was going to Control Panel, choose to view “Large Icons” and since I have a Dell laptop (XPS 15) instead of the Realtek HD Audio Manager, I had “Dell Sounds”. Just clicked on than and immediately after that a notification pops up saying that a decive was detected a decive (my headset) and askes what kind of a device had been plugged in and I noticed it was defaulted to “Headphones” but there was another option that said “Headphones (with microphone” Chose that option and it has been working just fine since.

    - Might want to check if you hace the Realtek HD Audio Manager in case of not having a Dell or any other audio manager that might appear in that section of the control panel. :)
