Worth getting a USB Audio DAC?

I have the HyperX Cloud Alpha's, and have been thinking on getting the USB Audio DAC. I would use it strictly for gaming. Mainly play FPS and PUBG. Would it be worth it?Here is the link: https://www.amazon.ca/HyperX-Amp-Sou...DZF6E434SN782P

    Hi there
    @ern88

DAC's (Digital Analog Converters) are the business end of what your ears eventually here and ears work in analog mode.

However you need to consider all these things with audio :

    1) Quality of source sound -- if it's 64 kbs mp3 sound even a super cray computer won't improve sound quality --64 kps is just about bearable for audio books if you are playing them in a car or other noisy environment.

    2) quality of original signal --if it's hideous then no amount of hardware will really improve it.

So your issue here is what are you going to play the output of your USB-->DAC into. Actually most mobile phones (even cheap ones) have quite good built in DAC's.

Once we start getting into discussion of "Hi-Fi" sound the sky's the limit -- you can pay 1000's of dollars for what other people might only see as a marginal improvement.

What you need to check are the following :

    1) DAC converters do the job decently without leaving a huge amount of artifacts.

    2) Use FLAC or other lossless source signals for your audio.

    3) If you have to use the universally popular mp3 system then ensure you use at least 320 kbs source -- some might work at 256 kbs if you are using those horrible bud earphones in a noisy place but for decent sounds you need better than that.

    3) ensure sound source is OK --if it's horrible no amount of expensive gear will improve it.

    4) if you have a decent amount of money to spend try these !!!!!! - I'll have to try a bet on Horse nr 3 at local horse races to get a pair though !!!

Hands on: Bose Noise Cancelling Headphones 700 review | TechRadar

Don't buy in UK -- the VAT (20% sales tax) is horrendous -- I'm looking at a pair for around 299 EUR !!

    Cheers

    For gaming? No.
An external DAC **might** improve your audio quality.
For audio production work that's a necessity. For gaming it would be pointless.
