    Audio CD's not playing

    I have a self-built comfuser w/an ASUS M5A97 LE R2.0 motherboard, using the onboard audio & running 10 Pro 64Bit.

When I put either a CD/DVD in my optical drive, I don't have any problems reading documents, opening pictures & videos or starting .exe files, but for some reason audio files will not play.
I'll put an audio CD/CD-R into the drive & iTunes WILL start, but none of the songs will play. I'll open VLC, but still no songs will play.

I may have to crack open the case to check the wires. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should check software-wise?

Hi, do you mean your PC is newly built and has never played these, or that it used to and now doesn't?

If the latter, do you know when it stopped playing them, and what happened around then? (E.g. feature upgrade, other major change...).

What sort of CD are you referring to? Ones you've created, or bought ones? If the former, please provide a screenshot of the CD content as viewed in file explorer.

To post a screenshot, please use the Insert Image icon above your post.

If you have, say, a mp3 file on your internal drive, will anything play that file?

Clear answers will help anyone trying to understand your situation. Thanks.

I built the comfuser years ago & it played audio from store bought CDs & self-made CD-Rs just fine (.cda, .aiff, .wav, .ogg, .aac, mp3, etc.), this was back when I was using 7. I 1st updated to 10 in December 2015, about 5 months after it came out, but I don't recall trying to play CDs/CD-Rs since the upgrade.
All audio & video files that are on my internal, external & flash drive play just fine.
Also, as a test, I put a DVD w/music videos on it into my optical drive & the videos play just fine.

Below is a screenshot of what I see in File Explorer when I put a store bought CD into my optical drive.

    CJW,

There's nothing wrong with what File explorer is showing you. That's how a commercial CD appears in it.

The problem is, as you have said, that your applications are not playing them.
    - Perhaps you could try WMP & Groove music as well in the hope that the symptoms / error reports from them [& those from iTunes, VLC] will, between them, provide enough information to figure out what is happening.
    - Perhaps you could also rip a CD onto your computer using WMP or one of the others to see how it copes with that job.

I am not getting ANY messages (error/otherwise) from iTunes or VLC.
Ripping the CDs onto my computer (in .mp3 format) is exactly what I am trying to do, but the songs are just not playing at all.
I'll have to DL Windows Media Player & Groove to test those out, thanks for the advice.

Unless you have one of the specially-limited "N" version of Windows [which I doubt given the flags & timezone shown in your TenForums posts], these are both components of Windows 10 and should already be on your computer.
    - I suggested them as additional tests to run to avoid you doing too much additional work.
    - My hope was merely to gain additional data about the problem by using them.
    - WMP cannot be downloaded unless you do have one of those "N" versions.

WMP - If it is not at
For Windows 64 bit - C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Media Player
    For Windows 32 bit - C:\Program Files\Windows Media Player
then go to Control panel, Programs & features, Turn Windows features on or off and select it.
[There is a route for doing this through Settings as well]
    - When you try to rip using WMP, there is no need to play the tracks while you do it. The tracks should appear when WMP detects a CD and you select its Rip tab.

Groove - "Groove music" should be in your Start menu. I know apps like this can be uninstalled but have never used this procedure so do not know how to reverse it. If you get WMP sorted out then perhaps there is no point testing any further using this one; as I say, I suggested it because I thought it would be quick & easy for you.

Referring back to the files you saw on the CD. They are .cda files so have a look in the Registry at HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.cda
    - You should see an entry called Default with something similar to this WMP11.AssocFile.CDA {{mine are associated with WMP - yours should be associated with something}}
    - I am not suggesting doing anything with this entry but whatever is written there might shed some light on the nature of the problem you are facing.

    Try3:
I have 10 Pro 64Bit, but neither WMP or Groove are on my comfuser. I went into the 'Turn Windows features on or off' section & checked Media Features (as seen below) & rebooted; but WMP is still not on my comfuser & I can't find Groove on the list at all.
I've also checked the Registry & .cda files are still associated & set to open w/iTunes, which they do, but songs just don't play.

By using VLC's long way, I was able to convert a CD's .cda files into .mp3 files. This is tedious since I have to go track by track, but as least I did find a way. Though, that still doesn't solve my original problem.

Your default player is iTunes. The cd seems to be correct. The browser viewer shows as if they were just icons, from 1KB list your playback from another media player you have and add the reader unit to the player.

Yes, the CD is displaying in File explorer correctly. Here's one of mine.

What do you mean by this? The only illustration by the OP has been the File explorer diagram and that shows the CD correctly.

    CJW,

Oh, dear. There is something different about your Turn Windows features on or off. Mine, as you can see below, has a sub-section within it that explicitly identifies WMP. Yours has no sub-section at all.

See Install or Uninstall WMP - TenForumsTutorials option 1, which shows the Settings route to installing WMP. Perhaps this will download it first and then load it
    - Do not waste your time using the download link for "N" Editions. It will not work unless yours is an "N" Edition.
    - I can remember reading about some/all Enterprise versions of Windows 10 coming with no WMP component.
    - I do not recall hearing that any Pro versions came without WMP. I only have one Windows 10 Pro computer and that has always had WMP despite no special action having been taken.
    - I have also asked the tutorial author about your situation. You'll see my question when you read the tutorial.

Groove, about which I know next to nothing, is an "app" not an application. It normally comes pre-installed in Windows 10 but can probably also be downloaded from the Windows Store [I imagine it is free].
