Can't update from 8710 HDA. DM says it's up to date.

Those are the ones that get updated more often now by ASUS, HDA is a dying breed.
The only thing I see that would bite is, the DTS, which doesn't even allow pass through like Dolby Atmos, when non-compatible listening devices are connected.
    Example:
My headset is Dolby Atmos and sounds great.
My soundbar is not Dolby Atmos, but will still play sound even when I don't turn it off.

I have just ordinary speakers, stereo + woofer (no separate connection) but they sound great. Headphones are just cheap ones used mostly for Voip. I just like the way I can switch and adjust them without any fuss, unlike UAD and APP.

For me switching is the exact same, you get the pop up(if you want it) and click yes.

The only problem I can see is you do not get Sonic Suite, so I guess you can't adjust the EQ with the UAD version
So I guess HDA IS necessary then.

Yes you got it exactly right, also with HDA I can switch sound from Realtek icon on taskbar, don't have to plug or unplug anything.
