Hey Everyone! I'm new to all this audio driver tweeking so take it easy on me. It's good information and I pick up a little something form everyone. I would have signed up sooner but it took me 2 days to get past the 'captcha'. I have test anxiety and always over analyze those things. A few basic questions:
1. I see everyone has a favorite driver. Does it really matter though if I'm testing them out on my laptop PC? I notice some popping sounds from some drivers but not others. Sound quality sounds the same, but again these are laptop speakers.
2. I want to hook up the laptop to some Logitech THX speakers. I'm assuming the difference among specific drivers will be noticeable. Whats the recommendation on the connection? Aux/Bluetooth adapter? I'm leaning towards the VGA/RCA. Ya?
3. Where's this DTS software from Microsoft?
Thanks!
For the first question:
No - if you'll look back, many have favorites based upon simple testing, and a few of us have favorites based upon more exhaustive testing, but, ultimately, the one you choose is exactly that - your choice.
You can tell us if you want, but are not required to. Whatever works best for you is what you should stick with.
For example, I'm always explicitly stating that my reviews are very subjective, and in a very normal case scenario, in that I have a regular RealTek HD AUdio chiipset (a rather old one, in fact, in that my mobo received its last BIOS update in 2011) and I simply connect a pair of headphones to the front panel headphone jack - no special DACs, no amplifiers, nothing. Granted, I have a set of AstroGaming A40 (1st generation) headphones, with 40 mm drivers, extremely great frequency response, and made before Astro was bought out by Logitech - but other than that I'm pretty simple.
My last set of tests (largest by far in terms of musical selection) was partially online listening and partially local listening - but then someone posted an excellent audiophile page that had an extensive set of tests (and by extensive, I mean that you could probably spend a whole day there and still not cover every test in every scenario that you might use to listen to audio through our computer - tests for hardware responses, test for hearing ability, even tests for detecting sound dB drop (I've only done the 6 dB drop, and I hit that one 10/10). It's name says it all: The Ultimate Headphones Test
I wanted to run a new set of tests with both audio as well as incorporating some of these, but I did not ge a chance to do so over the weekend - and now I am engrossed in a different project, so it may be a while.
But since you already mentioned pops and such, you're moving in the right direction - find the driver that fits your style and clarity and run with it.
I'll let others more knowledgeable answer the other 2.
On my system the sound with this driver is very ok
