had to swap monitor to old DVI monitor but cant get any sound

My Monitor packed up yesterday so I dug out an old DVI monitor I had.
Obviously no sound on that but I seem to have only Nvidia High definition audio drivers which give me error that I have no display connected.
Fair enough that's true but my motherboard is a gigabyte X470 AORUS ULTRA GAMING-CF (AM4) which has
ALC1220 120DB(A) SNR HD AUDIO on board so I should be able to plug headphones in shouldn't I ?

I have tried uninstalling the NVidia drivers from device manager and scan for hardware changes and they get re-installed but it doesn't seem to find any other audio device.

I tried installing realtek drivers from Gigabyte but they seem to install ok but nothing changes!
on my Taskbar I'm getting a red X by the speaker icon and it's saying "No speakers or headphones are plugged in" but of course they are plugged in.

I'm not sure what to do now as its going to take weeks to get my monitor repaired even if I can.
Can't live without sound for that long.

would appreciate advice on what to do next.

    Thanks

    Mike

DVI does not have sound. You have to use a audio cable plugged into the audio out jacks to speakers. Check to make sure the output device is correct for the volume. Use dxdiag to diagnose.

I know there is no sound on DVI and I have headphones in my audio jacks. The only device listed in my devices is NVidia HD digital Audio.
My problem is that while I know that I have a sound card on my mobo I cant get it recognised.
I have enabled it in the BIOS and I have the realtek drivers installed but they just don't find the sound card?

DXdiag reports no sound card found?

Check Asus’s website for the proper drivers for your motherboard.

Check in your UEFI settings to make sure the onboard audio controller is enabled. Also, right click on your speaker icon and select open sound settings. On the control panel that opens you should be able to select output device. What is listed there?

When I right click on speaker Icon
I get "Speaker Setup (unknown)" on top
    then "Sounds"
    then "Troubleshoot Sound Problems"

NVIDIA is only for HDMI audio, not regular PC audio. Windows is not detecting your PC sound card or it would install the correct driver or at a minimum install the generic High Definition Audio driver.

If you checked the BIOS and its enabled, resetting the BIOS (clearing CMOS memory) may be required.

The ASUS Sabertech motherboard you show has Realtek audio.

Yes I know the Nvidia drivers are only for my Monitor it's just the PC can't seem to find the onboard adio for some reason.
I will give clearing the cmos a try later
    thanks

Double check the BIOS again to make sure the on-board audio is enabled. The ASUS BIOS can be confusing.
If its not enabled (or the BIOS not identifying it) Windows will not detect it.

There seems to be only one place in the BIOS where Audio is mentioned and that's under peripherals.
I have checked it a dozen times. I have disabled it and re-enabled it to see if that would work but windows can't find it.
How do I check to see if the bios can see it.

    can I use command prompt?
