No audio output device is installed?

I'm not sure what happened, but I noticed that my laptop has no sound. When I hover over the sound icon it says 'No audio output device is installed'. When I go into device manager, I don't see the Realtek drivers listed there, only some Nvidia drivers. When I try to add them, my computer crashes. I do see an error for the 'High definition audio device', and when I check the properties I see a code 10, but it says they are up to date. My computer also recognizes that there is an error with the high definition audio device, but when I try to trouble shoot it, the troubleshooter just says they can't solve the issue.

When I go into the control manager, I can see the Realtek drivers and card readers are installed. I have tried to uninstall the drivers and re download from the MSI Product Support page for my laptop, but every time I try to install it, my computer crashes. I have tried a factory reset on my laptop and am seeing the same issues. My windows is up to date. I feel like i've tried every solution I've been able to find, and nothing has worked. I'm not really sure what else I can try? Any help is appreciated!

Uninstall the "High Definition Audio" device listing in the Device Manager. Then restart Windows and after the restart check to see if, at least, the High Definition device is resolved and you have sound.
If that works then download the Realtek driver from MSI and install it.

hi! thank you for your suggestion! i've tried to uninstall the high definition audio controller, and still see the same error (code 10) after restarting. is there another way to uninstall it apart from the device manager?

Next step, reinstall the Intel motherboard chipset driver. One of the things the chipset driver does is identify all the devices and that could be one reason.

If the chipset driver does not help, reset the BIOS. But, before you reset the BIOS note any customization you have made to the BIOS as it will be gone with the reset and will have to be reentered. Again, if the BIOS is not recognizing or properly recognizing a device then Windows will not too.
